What do running back Rachaad White and I have in common? We're both crazy good at football. Just kidding (he's crazy good; I can't catch a football to save my life). We've both been involved in BBBS--me as a Big, and him as a Little. In collaboration with NFL Inspire Change, Big Brothers Big Sisters launched the Big Draft to encourage more people to become Bigs: The goal is to reach 10,000 new mentors in 60 days, and we have about 20 days left to reach that goal. In my house, there's a lot of debate (and tears) over the Packers vs Lions, but we all love supporting BBBS. I hope I've helped my Little navigate middle school and high school, but I can say that she's helped me grow, too. We both push each other to try new things. It was an honor to take my son to support his grandpa at the Lott Trophy Awards Dinner. It was awesome to meet all the finalist and learn more about their greatness both on and off the gridiron. Last week, I finished my first course serving on staff of Wood Badge, an advanced, national leadership course open to Scouting volunteers and professionals. Those who know my story know my commitment to Scouting -- a life-altering experience for me (and many other young people in our nation). Those who know me WELL know that my commitment to Scouting was truly tested in 2000, when the Boy Scouts took a case all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court defending their right to expel members because of sexual orientation. Especially starting law school in 2001, being "the Boy Scouts guy" was hard to defend for a few years. Fortunately, what I knew and the public did not is that the Boy Scouts of America was much, much more than the public image it portrayed and was absolutely moving in the direction of justice. Today, it is not only accepted but commonplace to serve alongside volunteers without any concern about their sexual orientation whatsoever. When we teach about reverence, we teach Scouts (and adults) that it means being faithful to your religious beliefs while respecting the religious beliefs of others, including those who don't have a religious faith at all. And as a loud, proud #girldad, it has been the joy of my life to watch my own daughters experience the program to which I owe so much. If only other organizations -- say, universities and too many workplaces -- were able to so completely make the transition into what America was always meant to be. What our Founders meant for us to be! So you can probably imagine how my excitement only builds as the Boy Scouts of America embarks on its next chapter under a new name, now "Scouting America." The vision of our organization is a world where every youth in America is prepared to be a responsible, participating citizen and leader, and our specific aims are leadership development, citizenship training, personal fitness, and character development. The photograph below depicts our Wood Badge staff team of "Troop Guides," and it reflects what Scouting America is today: a place for everybody... truly everybody! Observing Greatness: Walter Payton Man of the Year Grant Presentation: The Walter Payton Man of the Year Grant remains as a signal of greatness, exemplifying the soul of empathy, commitment, and administration. Organized by the Public Football Association (NFL) in 1970, this lofty honor perceives players who show remarkable local area administration off the field. Named after the unbelievable Chicago Bears running back Walter Payton, this grant means something other than athletic ability; it connotes a pledge to having a constructive outcome past the game. History and Inheritance: Since its origin, the Walter Payton Man of the Year Grant has developed into quite possibly of the most regarded honor in pro athletics. Every year, one player from the NFL is regarded for their excellent commitments to society. The tradition of Walter Payton, eminent for his generosity and helpful endeavors, keeps on rousing players to involve their foundation for everyone's benefit. The qualities he exemplified - honesty, liberality, and initiative - act as the core values for beneficiaries of this recognized honor. And now for something COMPLETELY different that is on my mind. I am a scout leader. At present, I lead the Bear cubs group for our pack, I do some amount of stuff for the entire pack in scoutbook and I run our pinewood derby. In the 6 or so years I have been a leader, I have watched the costs that our pack has to pay for scouts AND adult leaders more than double. This has resulted in us unsurprisingly having to raise our costs to parents. As it stands, it costs us almost $250 per scout to run our cub program between activities, advancement items, chartering the scouts, etc. As those costs have gone up, parental involvement and volunteers have gone down. I'm assuming it's an expectation that if the costs are that high SOMEONE has to be getting paid to do that - which at our level is clearly not the case. Those broken expectations also sometimes cause parents to push back on the program when they don't have the best experience, which causes a lot of stress to leaders such as myself. This causes us to lose leaders and make the problem worse. What can we do as a society, scouts or anywhere to end this cycle? It's not unique to scouting; it's just the program I'm involved with. I hear similar stories with rec sports leagues and other things. The sense of entitlement is going up, and it's causing leaders who are freely giving their time away to quit.
