After a just under a year of research and design, Diya Parekh and I have completed the Gold CREST Award. The Gold CREST Award represents a high level of achievement in scientific research and innovation, issued by the British Science Association. This prestigious award is given to students who demonstrate exceptional commitment, creativity, and scientific understanding through the completion of an in-depth research project. Project Highlights: • Research: Conducted research on fluid dynamics and developed a platform that glides over surfaces using an air cushion. • Innovation: Designed a unique mobile laboratory, showcasing creativity and critical thinking. • Experimentation: Created a range of prototypes to determine the optimal dimensions and materials needed for the project's success. • Presentation: Compiled findings into a comprehensive presentation, detailing the research and build process that led to the final prototype. This award underscores my ability to manage a complex project all the way till completion, demonstrating strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills. It reflects a deep passion for engineering.

Ok this idea is worthy of a mind expanding Friday post. 🤯 Researchers at University of Sydney and Monash University in Australia have done the legwork to identify some useful leading indicators for when a system is hitting a critical point (or bifurcation point). Let's (over) simplify and summarize the importance of critical points in this paper as the transition points in a system, like liquid to solid, or from order to chaos. These transitions cover complex systems too such that a power grid fails or stock market crashes etc... It's very difficult to predict such points due to the measurement of noise in a system. These researchers have come up with a methodology that they term rescaled auto density (RAD) and share their findings (I am attaching a pre-print here) in a paper for APS's Physical Review X. This is really interesting, testable, and seems very usable right away. Critical materials are materials essential to a broad range of technologies but subject to supply risks and for which there is no easy substitute. What constitutes a critical materials depends on who, where, and when you ask. In a perspective published in TheBridge with Nat Trask, Brad Boyce, and George Karniadakis, we present the challenges of finding viable solutions to critical materials and the merits of using materials informatics married with high throughput materials synthesis and characterization for scientific discovery and understanding of alternative solutions to critical materials.
