There are tens of thousands of really smart, exceptionally talented people looking for a new job right along with you. In this considerably competitive job market, it's time to get creative and curious in order to crush your job search strategy. Step 1: See a great job opportunity online. (Do NOT click Easy Apply) Step 2: Find the company on LinkedIn and identify whether you have any mutual connections or second connections to employees there. (Do not click Easy Apply) Step 3: Reach out to those connections in a passive way that doesn't mention you're looking to apply for a job there. Step 4: Schedule 15min to talk to this person/these people and ask them about their role and the company. Step 4.5: Make a mental note of any way you could possibly bring them value (ie; podcast or book they should read, event they should attend, person in your network they should meet.) Step 5: Ask them for advice on the company like this: "I'm considering my career options and have heard great things about X company. What's your advice on learning more about how the Y team operates? Do you know anyone on that team that I should meet?" Step 6: Make a note on your calendar to check in with them (in a friendly way) in a few weeks and move on to the next contact. Applying online is only one component of a great job search strategy. The best jobs are found through relationships. The best way to build relationships is by being curious and service minded. The best time to build relationships is when you don't need a favor. Get to Know the Board Tuesday… Sheryl Santi, SANTI EXPRESS, Inc Agent for Wheaton World Van Lines 1. How did you get your start in the moving and storage industry? Where was your first job, and what did you do? I actually trained as a nurse and ended up falling in love with a mover from Neptune Moving. This was in the mid-70s. We moved to Rockland County and bought a moving truck. I learned how to give estimates. We eventually became a certified woman-owned business. We had no advertising budget and received all of our work through word of mouth. 2. What do you like and/or appreciate the most about the industry? I loved selling. Helping people during one of the most stressful times was very rewarding to me. 3. How did you get involved with the NYSWMA Board of Directors, and how has this helped you or your business? Bruce Gold, with Gold Service Movers, another NYSMWA member, called me about attending a meeting in my area. I really enjoyed being amongst other industry professionals, being with like-minded people. I met the then-Director of AMSA at one of our meetings and ended up being in their quarterly magazine! The connections, people, help from other movers has been invaluable to me. 4. What do you like to do, outside of the business? Here's a perspective very well worth every practice owner's time considering -  As a start-up, in the first phase of your practice, your job is to serve your clients. As you grow, and hire staff, your job becomes to serve your team who in turn serve your clients... Make sense? By "serve your team" is meant - with training, coaching, and managing. It’s not you who should be bogged down with work, as you grow. Your goal was never to become your own best employee!! I would love to hear your thoughts on this viewpoint and how you can maybe apply it to your practice?
