To achieve further progress in ensuring the full participation of persons with disabilities, the new and strengthened Strategy for the Rights of Persons with Disabilities 2021-2030 will guide the action of Member States as well as EU institutions, building on the achievements of the previous ten years and offering solutions to the challenges ahead. The goal is to ensure that persons with disabilities in Europe, regardless of their sex, racial or ethnic origin, religion or belief, age or sexual orientation: 💫 enjoy their human rights, 💫 have equal opportunities, 💫 have equal access to participate in society and economy, 💫 are able to decide where, how and with whom they live, 💫 can move freely in the EU regardless of their support needs, 💫 no longer experience discrimination.

I am happy to share that my article, “Digital Divide Chronicles: Bridging the Gap in Digital Access and Inclusion for Persons with Disabilities” has been published in the "Disability and International Development" Journal by the Institute for Inclusive Development of the Behinderung und Entwicklungszusammenarbeit e.V. I emphasize the interconnected issues of #DigitalLiteracy and the #DigitalDivide, exacerbated by the #COVID19 pandemic. By drawing on the ‘Disabilities and technology: How we can expand inclusive education to achieve SDG4' Research I did for Theirworld, I argue that despite the potential of digital technology to bridge gaps for #PersonsWithDisabilities, they continue to face exclusion due to inaccessible digital systems. While technology offers countless opportunities and is essential for education, employment, social inclusion, and health, many #LearnersWithDisabilities are #LeftBehind. Economic, technological, and infrastructural barriers continue to hinder access to technology, particularly in the Global South. This exclusion has ethical, human, and legal implications, violating rights and perpetuating discrimination. Collaboration between governments, businesses, and NGOs is crucial to address these barriers and ensure digital inclusion for persons with disabilities. On 3 December, the United Nations marks the International Day of Persons with Disabilities. It is aimed at promoting the rights of persons with disabilities in all spheres of society and development. One in five women globally live with a disability. According to the UN, women and girls with disabilities suffer up to three times greater risk of rape, and are twice as likely to be survivors of domestic violence and other forms of gender-based violence than women without disabilities. In the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD, Article 6), States Parties recognized that women and girls with disabilities are subject to multiple discrimination, and in this regard shall take measures to ensure the full and equal enjoyment by them of all human rights and fundamental freedoms. Much more needs to be done to ensure the full development, advancement and empowerment of women, for the purpose of guaranteeing them the exercise and enjoyment of the human rights and fundamental freedoms.

This International Day of Persons with Disabilities, the African PHSN- Ethiopian NWG proudly champions the commitment to empower each person , congratulations to the nearly 8 million Ethiopians and 1.3 billion individuals with disabilities worldwide. At the halfway point to the 2030 Agenda, systemic discrimination still persists, hindering meaningful inclusion across society. Hence, achieving sustainable development for persons with disabilities demands a focused approach on their needs and rights — not just as recipients but as active contributors in social, economic, and political life. So in order to uphold the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, we must ensure their representation at decision-making tables and integrate them into efforts to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals. From poverty eradication to health, education, and climate action, inclusivity is key. The African PHSN- Ethiopian NWG stands in solidarity, emphasizing the importance of working hand in hand with persons with disabilities to co-create solutions based on equal rights in every Ethiopian community and beyond

“My voice matters because as young people, we should be involved and we should contribute. We should contribute to ensure that the world is a better place for all of us. The voice and needs of young people should be fully reflected, so that we have a better world." We cannot have inclusive societies if people with disabilities, especially young people with disabilities, are excluded from decision-making. At the #HLPF Basiru demanded that decision-makers address this imbalance by consulting and including young people with disabilities in the Summit of the Future and beyond. Sunday 3rd December marks United Nations International Day of Persons with Disabilities. Unfortunately, given the crises we as a global society are facing, the world is not on track to reach many of the UN's Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030. The forthcoming Disability and Development Report indicates we are especially offtrack in meeting SDGs for Persons with Disabilities. Efforts to achieve these goals need to be intensified and accelerated given the fact Persons with Disabilities have historically been among those left furthest behind. This is why we are proud to recognize International Day of Persons with Disabilities by announcing the launch of Next Step Foundation's Upili Pilot Program. Upili brings together Counselors with Disabilities, teachers, peer counselors and parents/caregivers to create a scaffolding of support for Students with Disabilities. The program instills self-confidence, improves academic performance and provides the tools to successfully navigate future discrimination so Persons with Disabilities can achieve lasting economic independence. As we celebrate AccessAbility Week, we also take this opportunity to recognize and raise awareness of the intersectional factors between disability, accessibility, race, and gender. Black individuals with disabilities often face compounded challenges and discrimination, making it of utmost importance for us to address these issues holistically in our workplaces and to transform our ways of working to better serve all Canadians. By promoting the engagement and inclusion of Black Canadians with disabilities and fostering their advancement and well-being, we can create a diverse and inclusive environment where everyone can thrive. Today I would like to highlight an alarming report from ILGA-Europe and the European Disability Forum regarding the experiences of LGBTIQ persons with disabilities in Europe. * LGBTI persons with disabilities experience greater financial difficulties, especially for trans women. * Higher likelihood of experiencing homelessness. * Significant barriers in accessing healthcare, with high levels of inappropriate comments from healthcare providers. * High levels of discrimination in workplaces, healthcare, social services, and public spaces. * Increased incidents of harassment and violence, particularly targeting trans women and intersex people. Perpetrators of violence include family members, acquaintances, neighbors, and public servants. As we celebrate Pride and head towards the start of Disability Pride Month, we must remember that many disabled LGBTIQ people live in unsafe situations. As well as celebrating Pride, we must work to strengthen policies that address these inequities and put an end to discrimination.
