It is not within your control if you're privileged. It is within your control to do something with it. Ever been in a 'privilege war'? You know, that ridiculous competition over who's got it worse? In this clip from 'The Purpose-Driven Workplace', Raquel Walsh and I are busting this nonsense wide open. We're tackling the myth that having privilege means you didn't earn your success. Spoiler alert: that's not what privilege is about. Here's the real deal: 1. Privilege isn't some personal favor - it's baked into our institutions. The folks who wrote the rules? Yeah, they made them work for people like them. If you're similar to them, you'll likely have more privileges in that environment than people who are different. 2. Context is king (Queen? Nonbinary royalty?). I'll hit you with an example of how I'm both privileged and marginalized as a woman US citizen vs. a male immigrant. It's not black and white, folks. 3. I'm better than you! I find it sad having to discuss this in today's world, knowing that cycles aren't changing. Why do some people feel they have the right to tell their peers what they can and cannot do or what they should or shouldn't do? I encourage anyone to stand up and say "NO!" even if they prefer to avoid confrontation. I advise them that the behaviour they are subjected to is sadly not limited to them; that there shall always be some people, regardless of age, that feel the need to try to place themselves above others. I reiterate that they are a person's equal and a person's bullying ways screams out an insecurity in themselves. Why does this cycle continue? Why can't some people focus on their own matters? Why is it they only find bravado when their pack surrounds them? Why do some people deal with it more philosophically? Simple.
