Today, Governor Whitmer highlighted the new school aid budget, which delivers on the Michigan Guarantee so every high school graduate can earn an associate’s degree or skills certificate from an in-district community college tuition-free, saving more than 18,000 students up to $4,800 a year.  Read more in a recent media release at https://lnkd.in/gRHDj7HP.

Nothing is free- tuition free means at taxpayer expense

As admirable as increased investment in associate degrees, this will prove to be a tough budget for most of Michigan's schools. YoY School Aid Fund spending will decrease by $800 million (about 4%) as the go-go days of ESSERS funds recede. The state continues its admirable but painful chipping away at the UAAL retirement debt. As a state we are about halfway through our 30 year effort to close the MPSERS (retirement fund) liability. There will be some white-knuckle local budgets over the next 15 years. The state is doing the right thing paying down that UAAL, but it will become more painful as student and state population levels stagnate (at best).

Making this apply only to in-district community colleges leaves out students from rural areas where there are no in-district community colleges!

A couple questions. Will this need to be renewed annually at the state level and is that what an associates degree costs is $4820?
