Avoid Making Your Vehicle a Target for Theft   When out and about in your car, don’t make it a target for theft.   According to AMI’s latest insurance data for New Zealand, there were nearly 17,000 vehicle theft claims in 2023 up from 8492 the year before, making it the second highest year for vehicle theft over the past five years. This data points to the need for a more security-minded approach by owners when leaving their vehicles unattended. Here’s some top tips to help turn would-be thieves away: 1. Roll up the windows fully and lock your car, no matter where it’s parked, keeping the keys with you. 2. Try to park in the driveway, or an attended, secure parking building especially after dark. If on-street parking is the only option, look for well-lit areas. 3. If you need to leave items in your car, keep them in the boot – don’t have them on display. 4. Install additional security to your car such as an alarm, engine immobiliser, steering lock, or keyless ignition system to help deter thieves. No one wants to come back to a nasty surprise after a great day out. While the federal government is chipping away at a plan to combat auto theft nationwide, P&C professionals can advise their clients now to help them protect their vehicles, experts said during a Canadian Underwriter webinar last week. “We call it a layered approach,” said Bryan Gast, Equite Association’s vice president of investigative services. “[Criminals] don’t want to be sitting in your vehicle for very long,” he said during CU’s ‘How to stop auto theft webinar.’ “The more that you can do to slow them down and make it harder, then perhaps they won’t have the right tools to defeat it.” The old-school steering wheel lock or the newer-school on-board diagnostics (OBD) port lock are two options consumers should consider for one step of their layered approach to preventing theft. #prevention #autotheft #autoinsurance #insurancesolutions #brokersworkforyou

Finally some relief from the Hyundia/Kia theft issues. This doesn't make the OEM a hero -- it's more like the hemorrhaging is abating. That vulnerability should never have been there to begin with, so this entire thing has been a multi-year exercise in damage control. Which is still in progress. It's a bit shocking that with all the problems and media attention 40% of vehicles don't have the software update yet... but 60% is substantial progress. There is an interesting comparison to a herd immunity argument here. The more vehicles get the fix, the less at risk other vehicles will be of attempted theft as word gets out that the "Kia Boys" hack no longer works.
