Too many leaders in the nonprofit sector are focused on the urgent needs of the populations they serve while fighting their own day-to-day problems, like not being able to fill critical positions, not having a competitive salary structure, having a shortage of working capital to innovate and not having enough money to evaluate the effectiveness of their programs. https://buff.ly/3Qn9Zyj #NonprofitChallenges #OrganizationalDevelopment #CapacityBuilding

I thought this was a great look at how non-profit HR can leave a lasting impact on both people at an organization and the community they serve. I appreciated Oyin Fadiora’s approach to HR, as it centered on honesty and accountability. #Finance #Nonprofit #HR #Culture #Leadership

Employee retention is a top concern for every organization. With low unemployment, employees are not only more willing to job-hop for more money or a promotion, but employers are often quick to poach talent from other organizations. As a result, nearly 2/3 of employers say they’re having trouble retaining employees, and nearly 80% of nonprofits have raised salaries in an attempt to keep staff. But more money isn’t the only solution, and in fact, it may not even be the best solution. Over 75% of workers in a Glassdoor survey say company culture matters and more than half said a good culture was more important than salary in determining their job satisfaction. Helping overstretched leaders in the homelessness sector and their teams achieve healthy work-life balance so that they can avoid burnout.
Vacant posts: the demise of staff retention 👇 This issue keeps coming up. When I first headed up a homelessness charity nearly twenty years ago, permanent contracts were the norm. Nowadays, with funding uncertainties, temporary contracts and fixed term contracts are often preferred. That means less job security for your teams. It often means a more transient workforce. This can have various impacts. Training costs and recruitment costs all begin to balloon. Loyalty to the organisation becomes diluted and without intentionality, so too can the values of the organisation. Let’s face it, so many people are struggling to make ends meet. Even if they love their job with you and feel settled, if a better paid job comes up, well, needs must. If you’re a small charity and there is no progression for staff, this becomes an even bigger dilemma. At the same time, there is only so long that your mainstay staff can manage two jobs at once while the vacancy remains unfilled. Their quality of work inevitably suffers. So might their morale. Identifying the right candidate and in a timely way is so important. Your key stakeholders may be struggling in the same way. For example, when local authorities see restructure after restructure, those contacts that you could simply pick up the phone to - they become less and less. Local knowledge gets whittled down. Great work gets stifled. What do you need to do differently to retain your staff? How successful is your recruitment strategy? What might you do differently? How agile is your organisation at thinking these things through? It's easy to DM me. #homelessness #housing #whatwedomatters

Many nonprofit HR professionals cite hiring as one of their major challenges, not due to lack of interest but to lack of experienced talent in highly skilled areas. A great example of this is in nonprofit finance It had to find someone with the requisite experience at the entry level, and those with heavy financial backgrounds often look for private sector poisons where rates are much higher. While there is no universal solution to this conundrum, it is clear that skilling and mentorship play a clear role in a stable path forward. #Nonprofit #Hiring #Culture #HR
