I often hear CEOs say they want to hire a COO. But I am usually perplexed by the ambiguity of the COO role, even in the CEO’s own mind. - What department will the COO oversee? - Who reports to them? - How do they fit with the broader company structure? The answers provided are usually hazy. Oversight of operations, while critical, is different from core business functions. In my view, the six foundational pillars of a business are sales, marketing, product, finance, HR, and customer service. Most often what the CEO truly needs is better described as a chief of staff. In this way, a good chief of staff frees you—the CEO—to focus on the responsibilities only you can fulfill: refining the vision, providing resources, building the culture, making mission-critical decisions, and delivering predictable performance.

Founder & CEO @ Nova Chief of Staff | Acclaimed Fortune 40 CoS to President | First-of-its-kind Chief of Staff Certification Course | C-Suite Leadership Speaker | Building Confidence Around the Globe 🌎
As a Chief of Staff, how do you build a strong relationship with an Executive Assistant? A few days ago I shared that as a Chief of Staff, one of the MOST important relationships you have is with your Executive's Admin. But HOW do you build that relationship? ***Especially if your role is brand new, maybe some feathers were ruffled with the hiring announcement, or maybe you got off on the wrong foot. Do this: 🔰 Approach humbly & curiously. 🔰Let your good intentions be known. 🔰Actually learn what they do. 🔰Show genuine interest in their life. 🔰Get buy-in, even when you're in a rush. 🔰Amplify them. 🔰Repeat. Most often, Chiefs of Staff are driven, achieving, and outwardly confident folks with big ideas for how to do things better. This is GREAT. But Chiefs of Staff should act with the assumption that in certain situations this may be intimidating or anxiety-inducing. It's NORMAL for an Executive Assistant (or anyone) to be wary of a new role/person supporting their leader. And natural to have concern about what downstream effects that may have on day-to-day responsibilities. As a Chief of Staff, your intentions matter. Through a consistent, thoughtful approach to your role - and the awareness of your impact on those around you - you will gain trust. And over time, you will be viewed as an ally. ⭐ Please share in comments: how have you built trust with your CoS/EA? What tactics above would you like me to elaborate on? Happy to. __ If this content resonates with you, follow for more. How's Your Timing? Just like investing in the market right before a rise, pausing at the top of the backswing in golf just long enough to square the clubface at impact, or refinancing your house when interest rates are at their lowest, you can benefit from perfect timing when a top-tier executive is considering a career move. Every week, I strive to connect with senior finance, accounting, and C-suite executives in the Twin Cities market. Occasionally, my timing is excellent, and I catch them when they are receptive to learning about new career opportunities. Recently, I've had the privilege of engaging with some remarkable professionals: A CFO/FP&A executive, 25 Yrs. Exp, MBA A CEO/Technology Leader, Software & Manufacturing A COO/CTO, Engineering Management Professional A Chief Commercial Officer, Healthcare & MedTech A CHRO with Financial Services/Public Accounting These individuals boast advanced degrees and track records marked by promotions and leadership roles. All are open to making a change for the right career move and share a desire to stay in the Twin Cities area. If you run a mid-sized business and are looking for a strategic leader to help grow or manage your company, contact me to discuss these and other exceptional candidates in my network. Your timing just might be perfect! #csuite #Twincities #leaders #timingiseverything

I added 50k+ MRR with 8-9 figure brands. But a year ago I would never have imagined it. Here's how I did it: It was all about 3 main areas of focus: Team: 1. Invested in high-level talent 2. Trained my team to crush high-level clients 3. Spread a larger account workload over more people Systems: 1. Internal service providers for media buying logistics (tracking, creative, etc...) 2. Hired assistants for high-level account managers so they can focus on client results. 3. Shared project boards between client and internal teams for full transparency of work. 4. No meeting on Wednesday so leadership can tackle deep work. Resources: 1. Hired a fractional CFO 2. Worked with a recruiting firm for the first time 3. Multiple trainings on developing a hiring pipeline 4. Leadership training for professional founders It's been a great start to 2024. But I'm excited to keep improving the business. My main takeaway so far is: Don't spread team members too thin and allow them to focus on their ONE THING. If you empower your team, you win. --- PS What have you learned in Q1 so far?

Managing Partner @ Trellis Partners | Expert in Scaling & Building High-Performing Organisations | Leadership Developer | Board Director @ Crypto.com & MoneySmart | Author of best-selling book "Smooth Scaling"
Let’s talk about career paths in multinationals. Typically, you start out in one function or another and work your way up. If you do well, chances are your first “big” job will be as a country president. These country roles are heavily sales and marketing-focused, but there are also other functions like HR, finance, government relations, and logistics. These roles are often a lot of fun as you have your full team, you can pull all the levers, and head office may be far enough away that you have some autonomy. Next up is then a bigger country… But, at some point, you have to graduate past the country manager role. Almost inevitably, the next role is as a Regional Manager, with multiple countries reporting to you. Sounds great, right? Not so much. Most people experience a huge let-down in this role. It’s usually a bit of a non-job because you don’t really run anything; you don’t have a proper team, no levers to pull. You effectively become a paper pusher worrying about budgets and corporate diversity initiatives. The better your Country Managers are below you, the more autonomy they’ll want or demand and the less you’ll actually end up doing. Of course, that is your main job - to ensure you have good country managers - but once you’ve sorted that, then what? How do you continue to add value without being a bully who overrides your country managers? Your views? #Management #TrellisAsia #Coaching #Leadership #Business
