Final thoughts for National AccessAbility Awareness Week #NAAW: Talking and thinking about accessibility this week each year is good, but based on the past 38 years since it started, the understandable worry is that the corporations and institutions in particular continue to engage in events, but not out of real interest or concern, but just more PR and nodding. Performative concern and interest, not a serious commitment to stop discrimination or create the culture change that's clearly needed. 38 years of "awareness" is a long time for so little actual change. Three things to do to prove your commitment: 1. Publish this week what you heard and learned from #NAAW2024 2. For #NAAW2025 start that week by publishing what specific disability barriers you removed in 2024 & what your remediation training, schedule, capital asset management planning, etc. for the remaining barriers are. 3. And for your NAAW 2025 presentations, include lessons learned from your 2024 barrier removal projects and how those lessons will be used going forward. Learn from Ontario's AODA mistakes. Their biggest was blowing their 20 year deadline to have the province fully accessible for all disabled people. Now with 7 months left, it will instead be a race to see who fails the least. The Accessible Canada Act also set a 20 year deadline of which we have 16 years 7 months left. Failing to plan now, is planning to fail every day between now and then; discrimination every day until barriers are removed. Let's make the Accessible Canada Act instead a race for excellence and who can get to equity and inclusion first. Did you know that the #African_Disability_Protocol (ADP) entered into force in June 2024? The ADP is a vital legal framework guiding African Union member states in developing disability laws and policies. Inspired by the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (#CRPD), the ADP reflects a social and human rights approach to disability. Adopted in January 2018, the ADP officially entered into force on 5th June 2024, following its 15th ratification on 5th May 2024. This #milestone was achieved through dedicated advocacy by organisations of persons with disabilities across Africa. 📢 Towards a new governance framework for #children and #youth policies in #Ireland ⤵️⤵️ OECD Public Governance and the European Union's DG REFORM were in Dublin on 30 January to present a Proposed Action Plan to implement selected OECD recommendations from the upcoming review of governance arrangements to deliver policies and services to children and young people in Ireland. The Action Plan will support the Government of Ireland in: 1) Setting up effective governance arrangements for the implementation of #YoungIreland, the new Policy Framework for Children and Young People in Ireland; and 2) strengthen monitoring and reporting capacities on child and youth policies and services across departments and agencies. The full report will be launched in a high-level conference with departments, agencies and non-governmental stakeholders on 📅  9 April 2024 in Dublin.
