Even though our members are always building, they still find time to help out. Check out these apprentices in Joplin, MO who are building a new wood-frame garage for one of their neighbors after it had been torn down in a recent storm. Great job, Brothers! Keep up the great work! #MidAmCarpenters #CarpentersGiveBack #UnionProud

Site Manager. Social Housing Refurbishment and Adaptations Specialist. Passionate about transforming and building spaces we live and work in, and helping change people's lives.
I have been doing a little bit of reflecting lately on the current position of an industry I have been officially part of for 34 years this month of September. How are we going to " Rebuild" our beloved Construction Industry? Grandfather rights going! More big players going under! Big gap still in apprenticeships still reeling from the " go to uni crew" Site Managers who have it drummed into them " speak to trades like sxht" yes there are still plenty Trades who through different reasons aren't up to standard bit they do have a special shiny card. Companies getting screwed left right and centre on payments or price. Decent trades getting out because they can earn more doing less stressful work. Trades who really do think they are worth their weight in gold and only work part time hours. The list is endless, who is going to train our future trades and site managers if alot of the poor traits I've mentioned above are they only type of people having these traits left? The good guys will be long gone soon, the good companies will be sick of getting screwed over on each contract. Soon all there will be left is private builds for the creame of the crop and the decent trades and management will leave the volume builders which in turn will give us sub standard housing for future generations.

As a roofer, the sky's the limit! 🔨🏠 These construction professionals are responsible for the installation, repair, and maintenance of various roofing structures. This includes everything from private houses to commercial real estate. Roofing is an easy career to get started in. Beyond a high school diploma or GED, no formal education is necessary. However, taking related classes at a trade school can set you up for future career success and help you stand out from the competition. Most roofers learn from the experience gained through paid apprenticeship programs. These programs are often organized by unions, trade associations, or roofing companies and typically last three to four years. They combine classroom instruction with hands-on training and are an excellent opportunity to earn while you learn. In our homestate of Connecticut, roofing contractors aren't required to have a license. However, if you operate under the title of a home improvement contractor, you will need to register with the Department of Consumer Protection. A yearly registration fee is applicable. #RoofingCareer #SkilledTrades #ApprenticeshipOpportunity #CTConstruction #RoofingPros

Roofing and Solar installations, Members of NFRC Trust Mark, Construction line , Former Roofing Lecturer
Roofing Apprenticeship Day: Back to Basics, Building Solid Foundations at Redcar & Cleveland College Today was all about revisiting and reinforcing the essentials with our roofing apprentices. We started with a revision of last week’s Abrasive Wheels session and moved on to some hands-on training. The practical part of the morning focused on changing blades safely in cut-off saws and ensuring the apprentices are confident in safe cutting practices. Safety is always a priority, so we followed that up with training on working at heights and ladder safety. For the second half of the day, the apprentices tackled a wet verge with single lap tiles, getting hands-on with verge to verge installation. I also ran a masterclass demo on bedding ridge tiles, showing them how it’s done. (Not gonna lie it felt good showing them and they were well impressed once I finished laying ridge tiles proud teaching moment) A big shout-out to Ubbink UK Ltd Chris Green for supplying goodie bags and loads of materials! 🙌 Your support made today even better for our apprentices. I’ll try to take some photos next time—as you can imagine, it’s been a busy day! And It’s crucial that we master the fundamentals of roofing—like marking out and gauging tiles, or what I like to call the Bobby Basics—before we take on more complex and challenging roofs. Laying strong foundations today builds confident and skilled roofers tomorrow! 💪🏽 #RoofingApprentices #RoofingTraining #SafetyFirst #HandsOnLearning #BuildingTheFuture #RoofingFundamentals #SkillsDevelopment #ThankYouUbbink Connor Greet Emma Booth NFRC Roofing Today Magazine

I recently had the privilege of learning about an important initiative led by passionate roofing professionals and organisations across the US. Steve Little, who is an ambassador of our #PeopleMakeRoofing campaign, explains how such initiatives and programs are helping to address one of the most pressing challenges facing our industry today: the skills gap. Empowering young people and tradespeople through education, and providing access to apprenticeship programs, is necessary if we are to revolutionize our industry. Trough the initiatives Steve speaks so passionately about, program leaders are demonstrating the diverse and exciting career paths available, both on the blue-collar and white-collar sides of the industry. The development of an apprenticeship program, elevating a bespoke curriculum, is being distributed to over 5000 trade schools across the nation. This marks the beginning of a transformative 10-year strategy to provide a clear career path into (and through) roofing, mirroring the established apprenticeships in other trades like plumbing and electrical work. As someone deeply invested in the roofing industry, I can't overemphasize the significance of initiatives like these. The skills gap poses a significant threat to the American roofing market, with shortages in both blue-collar and white-collar roles. Without intervention, we risk stagnation and missed opportunities for growth and innovation. We’re right beside trailblazers like those mentioned by Steve. Their dedication to paving a brighter future for our industry sits at the very heart of our People Make Roofing campaign, where investing in education and creating sustainable pathways into roofing are reiterated again and again as being necessary in ensuring the longevity and prosperity of our trade for generations to come. Meet Christina Riley, the Labor & Apprenticeship Representative on the Pacific Mountain Workforce Development Council. Learn more about Christina: Q&A with Christina: What was your first job and what did it teach you about work? My first dispatch as an apprentice laborer out of Local 252 was on Ft. Lewis for a contractor who had signed a job-only contract with the Union. I was the only apprentice, working with one journeyman. It was really overwhelming. After a few weeks had passed, and I had yet to be paid, I contacted my local, who taught me about our collective bargained agreement and assisted in getting me paid. Luckily, I had a few weeks off and was dispatched to another job, the Hood Canal Pontoon Replacement project. That was the best job I ever had, where I learned almost everything I needed about my craft. I fell in love with concrete placement and my Union. What drives you in your role as a union leader in workforce development? I think that as my roles have changed within my Union, one driving factor has stayed the same. Apprenticeship changed and shaped my life in a way I could never have expected. I work diligently to ensure that training remains with an industry-high standard while being accessible to all. Apprenticeship is an amazing tool to lift up all communities. #workforcedevelopment #careerdevelopment #laborleader #union #workforceboard #boardmember #workforcesystem #goodjobs #qualitycareers

“Human greatness is not discovered until it is tested; we must be hardened against fortune by fortune itself“
🌱🚧🌍 GROWTH AND OPPORTUNITY: Planting Seeds and Watering Them 🌱🚧🌍 I had an incredible opportunity today to represent both the North Atlantic States Carpenter Training Fund and Turner Construction, and I wanted to share my experience with all of you. It was a moment that truly emphasized the power of growth and opportunity, and how they can only materialize when we plant seeds and water them. Today, I had the privilege of joining the Chelsea Collaborative and MBK 617 (pre apprenticeships) on a tour of Faulkner Hospital in Jamaica Plain. Our goal was to enlighten and inspire pre-apprentices about the various phases of construction they could be involved in, should they choose to pursue a career as union carpenters. As we walked through the hospital, I couldn't help but feel a sense of excitement and possibility in the air. The pre-apprentices were eager to learn and absorb everything they could about the construction industry. It was a beautiful sight to witness their curiosity and passion. During our tour, we discussed the importance of planting seeds by acquiring the necessary skills and knowledge. We emphasized the value of education and training, as these are the seeds that lay the foundation for growth and success. We encouraged the pre-apprentices to seize every opportunity to learn and grow, knowing that their efforts will be rewarded in the future. But planting seeds is just the first step. To ensure growth and opportunity, we must also water these seeds with support and mentorship. We must create an environment where these pre-apprentices can flourish and thrive. That's where organizations like Chelsea Collaborative and MBK617 come in - they provide the necessary resources, guidance, and support to help individuals reach their full potential. The experience at Faulkner Hospital reminded me of the immense power we have to shape the future. By investing in the next generation and empowering them with the tools they need, we are not just building structures, but also creating opportunities for personal and professional growth. So, let's continue to plant seeds of knowledge, skills, and opportunities. Let's water them with support, mentorship, and guidance. Together, we can cultivate an environment where growth and opportunity are nurtured, and where dreams can blossom into reality. #GrowthAndOpportunity #PlantingSeeds #WateringThem #ChelseaCollaborative #MBK617 #ConstructionIndustry #UnionCarpenters #EmpoweringTheNextGeneration

There's no 'one size fits all' career pathway. That's why we work with our stakeholders, communities, and participants to develop tailored programs that meet their needs. The AGA Multi-Industry Pathway Program is a great example of our collaborative approach. #employment #skills #education #support #vocationaleducation #VET #vibrantfutures
We're excited to announce the launch of our Year 10 Multi-Industry Pathway Program. Developed in collaboration with local Department of Education staff and Vocational Education and Training (VET) specialists from Deakin University. The program is designed to help Year 10 students stay engaged in their education and choose the right path for Years 11 and 12. Over six months, students learn the basics of various industries including Automotive, Electrical, Plumbing and Building & Construction. Highlighting the success of the program is Bevan Troia, a Year 10 student from Taylors Lakes Secondary College, who successfully completed the program at our purpose-built training facility. Now, he’s more confident about his career choices and finishing Years 11 and 12 before eventually pursuing an Apprenticeship in Building and Construction. Proudly part of IntoWork Australia. This is mind blowing for me! My brother, Dean Donelon, Head of Construction at Tameside College talking on the Fix Radio Carpentry Show with Robin Clevett FIOC This is more or less a story of my life too, only told a lot more eloquently by my good friend. I remember that sunny night, walking over Tower Bridge too! Listen to Dean talk about his upbringing in construction and this trade of ours, and how he has grown and developed into not only an inspirational lecturer in FE, but the head of a hugely successful construction department at Tameside College. The show discusses the current route apprentices take through college, how they are taught and assessed, and the positives of bringing an apprentice from college onto site with you. It's a great listen if construction education is your thing. Dean also touches on recent comments made around apprenticeships from the Education Minister and appeals to you to consider teaching the trade at some point in your career. Both Dean Donelon and myself have over 30 years in the industry, and we both have one thing (amongst many other things) in common, we hate the "groove" that people fall into ... We hate the rut. We hate to stagnate in one place or one job/role for too long... We have both managed to find new routes and pathways to grow and develop in our industry, staying true to what we love and are both passionate about. Too many people in life say what other people want to hear. Grabbing onto straplines and pretending to be something they're not, just to try to get ahead and BS their way through life. Stay true to yourself. Find your passion and work at it. Nowt comes easy, but working at something you love, is never a chore.
