Opportunity

The Office of California Governor Gavin Newsom is implementing the "California Model" in prisons across the state, based on principles found in the Norwegian Correctional Services System, spearheaded by Brie Williams and Amend at UCSF. Dynamic Security is one of the pillars of this model: "an approach that promotes positive relationships between staff and [prison residents], accomplished through purposeful activities and professional, positive, and respectful communication." Attica Prison in New York State shares an example of dynamic security in this TedTalk given by a Correctional Officer and two Prison Residents who are working together to "deter at-risk youth from coming to prison." We are grateful to have been part of the stakeholders roundtable meeting, an enriching discussion that promises positive strides ahead in prison spaces! Last Thursday, the Commissioner General of Prisons Brig (Rtd ) John K. Warioba, CBS joined the Ps State Department for Correctional Services Dr Salome M. Beacco , CBS for a stakeholders Round Table meeting at the Prisons Staff Training college. The meeting was aimed at strengthening partnerships and collaborations in the corrections management for effective community safety. The discussions were centered around sustainability of projects initiated and formalizing partnerships.Stakeholders made commitments on the eight thematic areas: 1.Administrative, legal and policy framework support; 2.Revitalization of prisons farms; 3.Modernization of prisons industry; 4.Social protection; 5.Offender rehabilitation, reformation and reintegration coordination ; 6.Institution infrastructure and operational capacity 7.Housing ; 8.Environmental and climate change mitigation. #collaboration; #Honored

POPCRU applauds the DCS for the recent appointment of 1,003 trainees as permanent officials. This is a positive step towards addressing ongoing staff shortages and creating safer environments within our country’s correctional facilities. However, while this is a positive step forward, we would like to reiterate the urgent need for a far more substantial increase in correctional officers we want the number of warm bodies increased from 27,000 to 40,000, and a further 80,000 over four years. Our facilities are severely overcrowded, and our members are stretched too thin, leaving them vulnerable to potential threats. We desperately need more resources to ensure the well-being of both staff and inmates. We urge the DCS to prioritise ongoing recruitment and retention efforts.
