I'm concerned to see engineers hastily blaming Microsoft for the outage without understanding the root cause. The truth is that Crowdstrike, a security company, released a faulty update for Windows that caused the issue. This update was meant to enhance system monitoring but contained a bug that triggered a critical error. The problematic patch, 'C-00000291.sys', runs in Kernel mode, which has high-level access to system resources. Unfortunately, the buggy code attempted to access an invalid memory location, causing a panic that resulted in the infamous Blue Screen of Death (BSOD). To fix the issue, the faulty driver file needs to be manually deleted. It's important to note that Microsoft is not responsible for this issue; the blame lies with Crowdstrike's faulty update. Let's ensure we properly diagnose and understand the root cause before pointing fingers.

Ok, cybersec community - let's chat. The Crowdstrike outage has once again brought up the issue of tech consolidation. Nothing new; we've all known it's an issue for at least the last 20 years (Windows having around 72% market share). This could've just as easily been a Defender/Trend Micro/Carbon Black etc., etc., update. Now MS is talking about restricting access to the kernel for third parties; this might help, but is not the be-all, end-all answer to the issue. I'm looking to get people's thoughts on all of this! 😊 Is consolidation bad/good? Is restricting access to Layer 0 the right move? What do you think? Lessons learned from Crowdstrike? Please share!
