My personal reflections on the challenges and difficulties of practicing planning in an age of social media have been published in the Town and Country Planning Association (TCPA) Journal. Social media has become all-pervasive. A recent report highlights that close to 80 percent of the global population is using social platforms with an annual growth of 3.2 percent. Social media is rapidly changing the manner in which individuals and communities interact with public institutions. Social media has incredible power to communicate with a wide range of people however, it also has a destructive capacity, which, if not checked, or appropriately managed, can have devastating effects. Recent surveys of planning professionals have identified disturbing levels of harassment, partly encouraged through social media, as well as intimidation and safety concerns. The increasing levels of formal and informal complaints is having an impact on workload and time resource. The well-being of all planners should be a priority. Organisations need robust corporate social media strategies that include support for staff working on the front line. Such a policy should be front and centre in dealing with citizens.

Part 1 of 2: Happy New Year! Here is the first installment of 2024 of the Compliance and HR update compliments of HR Workplace Services, Inc. for the Huntington Insurance footprint. Heads up Illinois - several different paid leave laws are in effect, or going to be in effect including the latest from Cook County, IL. Colorado Equal Pay Act - On December 13, 2023, the Colorado Department of Labor Employment (CDLE) has issued their final Equal Pay Transparency (EPT) Rules and Statement of Basis, Purpose, Specific Statutory Authority, and Findings, which seek to clarify the Colorado Ensure Equal Pay for Equal Work Act. The rules attempt to clarify ambiguous provisions of the Act. The CDLE will be releasing further guidance in Interpretive Notice and Formal Opinion (INFO) #9A, which the CDLE website says is “coming soon.” Colorado Epinephrine Auto-Injector - On December 20, 2023, the Colorado Division of Insurance announced that eligible individuals can receive a 2-pack of Epinephrine Auto-Injectors for no more than a $60 copay beginning January 1, 2024. The Epinephrine Auto-Injector Affordability Program Application can be used by eligible individuals seeking an Epinephrine Auto-Injector through the program at a pharmacy. The poster can be found here: https://lnkd.in/eNnqCJaE Employee Notice - The State of Illinois released its Paid Leave for All Workers Act Notice. The notice is available here: https://lnkd.in/eM8VvJcd Cook County (Chicago and surrounding areas *This in addition to Illinois Paid Leave and City of Chicago Paid Leave*) - Beginning on December 31, 2023, employers must provide paid leave to all employees who work in the county and allow the leave to be used for any reason an employee chooses. The Cook County Board of Commissioners amended the Cook County Paid Leave Ordinance last week by making significant changes to the county's Earned Sick Leave Ordinance (CCPLO). Employees who work in the County or whose companies have a location there are entitled to at least one hour of paid leave for every forty hours worked under the CCPLO. Employees may use accrued CCPLO leave for any purpose, in contrast to the Earned Sick Leave Ordinance, which specifies how earned sick leave may be used. Enforcement begins, February 1, 2024. #hr #compliance #paidleave #equalpay #huntingtoninsurance
