The ISO 14001 standard aids us in identifying possible threats to the environment and ensuring we take measures to protect it. A great example demonstrating how Sierra Construction implements ISO 14001 is the different methods we adopted to curb the environmental impact of one of our Sierra Bridge projects: the Long Point Causeway Bridge! Located within the Long Point World Biosphere Reserve Foundation, the project limits encompassed the habitat of 17 endangered species and was a federally designated critical fish habitat. Due to the environmental sensitivity of the site, new methods of mitigating impacts to the environment had to be developed and innovated by our team! We are all becoming more aware of how important our environment is to us, considering health effects, safety, growth, and the future. Ships’ black and grey water   Ships’ sewage regulations reflected the maritime community’s aspiration from day one. After half a century, we have the good, the bad, the hopeless, and the unknowns.   The Good. Alaska’s effective permitting regime for large cruise ships is made possible by monthly sampling, greywater regulation, effective enforcement, and a greater resource and skill level on cruises. However, the advanced wastewater treatment systems (AWTS) proven on large cruises may not be viable on other 99% of the ships.   The Bad (and the Less Bad). The other marine sewage regulations do not enforce compliant discharges. Without effective enforcement, STPs/MSDs of good technological principles cannot afford the attentions needed to perform. There are now expectations to turn the Bad into the Less Bad on existing ships. Technical and regulatory know-how is needed to turn expectations into reality.   The Hopeless. Science-defying STPs and non-conformity STPs have been type-approved. They are beyond the help of the operators. They have been left unacknowledged and uncorrected, ready to defeat new rules having type approval at the core. They are also popular on the market. How to tell if an STP is, or isn’t, one of them?   The Unknowns. The Bad and the Hopeless triggered the revisions of MARPOL Annex IV in 2017. To keep our coastal areas safe and beautiful, we have a special department called Coastal Zone Management. They make sure that we don't harm our coastlines and backwaters. To do this, they've created a set of rules known as Coastal Regulation Zones (CRZ). These rules are like zones or areas along the coast, and there are four different categories. Each category has its own specific rules. Before anyone can build something along the coast, they need to follow these rules carefully. There are certain things they have to do, like protecting the environment and considering safety. Only if a project meets all these requirements will they get permission and a No Objection Certificate (NOC) to start their construction. This way, we can enjoy our coastal areas while also taking care of the environment.
