Tip #23: Evaluate the organization - does it believe what you believe? Yesterday on CBC, I listened to an interview with Jon Pole, President and Co-Founder of My Broadcasting Corporation. Jon was reflecting on the recent mass layoffs by Bell Media, and how MBC is looking to acquire 4 local Eastern Ontario radio stations unceremoniously ditched by Bell. MBC is not your ordinary media conglomerate. Jon made one thing crystal clear in his interview which distinguishes his company from so many others in the industry: He truly cares about the people. He went on to say how he knows what his listeners want - and delivers. He lives in the same community as a lot of them - he sees them when he's out grocery shopping. He employs people who care as much about the communities his stations serve as he does - and he personally knows who those people are. I'm a career coach, but he had me thinking I'd love to work there (and I'm neither in sales, nor a journalist)! If you are looking for work, you can assess the companies you speak with as much as those companies are assessing you. So - be intentional in that assessment. Ask thought-provoking questions that go underneath what's important to you in the organization you work for next. Questions which shine a spotlight on: 🔦 How the company demonstrates its values - to employees, to clients, to community partners. Do they believe what you believe in? 🔦 Leadership - think of the best leader you've ever had. What made them so awesome to work with? Does this company employ those kinds of leaders? 🔦 Team - think of the best team you've ever worked with. Why was this a team you were proud to work with? Does this company foster the same commitment to team accountability and collaboration? What else is important to you when you are looking for your next company to work with? How do you know they believe what you believe? You have touched on a very crucial point Michelle Schafer . We were discussing this aspect and it’s importance yesterday in our workshop. The company needs you as much as you need the job in the company. But the match in terms of values, mission and principles- not just written but demonstrated, is a much stronger reason why you should choose a company. Retention starts with demonstrating a value match on both sides.

I touched on this a bit yesterday in my post. You’ve really done a good job of going into the specifics in yours. 👏 It’s important to do our due diligence and find organizations, leaders and roles that align with us.
