JFF’s Quality Green Jobs Regional Challenge invests in an innovative group of regions leading on-the-ground efforts to tackle climate-related workforce challenges. Through a national learning community, these local partners have generated five key insights on the regional needs, risks, and opportunities at the intersection of climate and workforce development. Happy International Youth Day! 🌍👥 Today, we're shining a spotlight on the critical work of young environmentalists like our former intern, Zoe Ivatt. Zoe's recent blog post on rising groundwater in East Palo Alto is a perfect example of how local communities are tackling complex climate challenges head-on. In her analysis, Zoe reveals the hidden dangers of rising groundwater tables, a consequence of increasing sea levels. This phenomenon significantly amplifies flood risks in low-lying areas and, more alarmingly, exposes communities to concealed contaminants that pose serious health risks. East Palo Alto, given its geographic location and historical context of environmental injustice, emerges as a focal point for these compounding challenges. Zoe's work reminds us of the vital role young people play in addressing climate change and environmental justice. Today, on International #YouthDay, we celebrate the vital role of young people in driving climate change education and action. 95% of youth are deeply concerned about climate change, yet many feel unprepared by their education to confront these challenges. Formal education systems often miss the political aspects of #ClimateChange, leading young people to take action themselves. Through climate strikes and activism, they are filling the gaps left by traditional education. Movements like Fridays For Future International, led by Greta Thunberg, have amplified youth voices worldwide, turning students into climate educators who teach their communities — and even their teachers — about impactful actions. Youth are also exposing systemic flaws, such as outdated school textbooks that prioritize low-impact actions like recycling while neglecting more significant changes like living car-free. As youth-led initiatives continue to focus on advocacy, communication, literacy, and leadership, they are reshaping the narrative around climate change. Interdisciplinary approaches enable us to address climate crisis as an opportunity to better understand the roots of our human disconnect from the natural world. They include connection to place as an important lens for considering the current situation, and balancing out what's been called "techno-rational approaches" to providing solutions. Higher education must include reframing the observer and the observed as we question the constructs that have led us into non-reciprocal relationships with life around us. We're now able to understand the implications and limitations of Western paradigms, and form extensive international knowledge coalitions with a better sense of our own positionality. 2024 Interim Impact Report Highlights 1. We exceeded our DEI target of enabling at least 50 talents to achieve inclusive futures—we reached  9,867 talents! Our targeted initiatives contributed to SDG4 (Quality Education) and SDG10 (Reduced Inequalities). 2. We joined the Generation Restoration Movement to ensure our commitment to environmental sustainability and contribution to achieving SDG 13 ( Climate Action). 3.
