Despite this disparity, oral health care barriers have left 85% of the 9 million veterans in the US ineligible for dental coverage or care through Veterans Affairs. Rare Disease Day, celebrated annually on the last day of February, is an international observance to raise awareness, foster understanding, and support those affected by these often overlooked conditions. The CGRP class of #migraine therapies are gamechangers for patients, allowing many to return to normal life. Three are listed on the PBS with restrictions around their access. Five years ago, Novartis was refused PBS access for its CGRP therapy Aimovig, meaning people like Raphaella Kathryn Crosby have paid $9,000 a year to access it. Novartis is again seeking PBS listing and as Raphaella prepares to fight for access, the submission raises questions about the sustainability of funding expensive therapies for large patient populations. "We understand that managing migraine effectively threatens to break the entire health system, and certainly the health budget, but no one wants to talk about the enormous elephant in the room that is migraine," says Raphaella. "We are five million people of which two million will require long-term, ongoing management with medication of some kind, and all whom are equally as entitled to healthcare as people with rarer disorders." We recently launched an incredible pilot project to enhance care for individuals with Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) who visit our Emergency Department at the #AjaxPickeringHospital. 👏 This initiative underscores our commitment to Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, Accessibility, and Anti-Racism (IDEAA), as outlined in our Multi-Year Action Plan. In partnership with IHI, this pilot project includes: 🔍 A three-part data review; 📚 An SCD education plan for our staff and physicians; 📈 A robust evaluation framework. 💚 Why is this important? Sickle Cell Disease is a condition where red blood cells become crescent-shaped, causing severe pain crises and other complications. This disease predominately affects individuals from African, Caribbean, Middle Eastern, Mediterranean, and Indian backgrounds – who often face discrimination, in addition to the challenges of living with this debilitating disease. Together, we’re paving the way for compassionate and high-quality care for every patient, anchored in our commitment to inclusion, diversity, equity, accessibility, and anti-racism. Approximately 40% to 60% of nontraumatic lower limb amputations worldwide are caused by diabetic complications, and 80% of these amputations follow a diabetic foot ulcer. Yet, even though simple, noninvasive foot screening to find potentially hazardous foot conditions could prevent about 80% of the foot ulcers that can result in amputations, virtually all present nontraumatic foot and leg amputations are occurring on patients who did not have a recent preventive foot examination when the first foot ulcer occurred. #DidYouKnow Illinois could potentially be the first state to screen newborns for MLD? While New York has implemented a screening pilot that includes MLD, Illinois passed a law in 2023 that will get MLD on the screening panel state-wide, positioning it to potentially become the first state in the nation to screen all its newborns for MLD. Newborn screening is critical to ensure that children with this rare disease receive their diagnosis while they still qualify for life-saving treatment.
