Brooklyn Botanic Garden (BBG) is a historic community resource located at the center of Brooklyn that is driven by its mission for growth—in horticultural practices, climate adaptation, and visitor experience. A suite of recent projects has expanded ecology and horticulture programming for children, improved the garden’s accessibility, and reduced the site’s reliance on freshwater while easing the burden on the city’s aging stormwater infrastructure. Part of my passion is environmental science and environmental education. I write a column for a local FB group highlighting some of the many creatures and plants my Town hosts. Here is one about an interesting tree we have, probably planted in the 1950's. I am posting in honor of Tu B'Shevat, "birthday" of the trees happening tonight to tomorrow. Stratford’s Hidden Universe #stratfordhiddenuniverse #stratfordshiddenuniverse #stratfordecology #stratfordctecology #dawnredwood #redwood #livingfossil #waterloving #LongbrookPark #sequoia #metasequoia #glyptostroboides Another “Living Fossil” Found, Triple Sequoias in Stratford The different shade of red/ orange caught my eye on a recent walk around Longbrook Park. There are three Dawn Redwoods, or Metasequois Glyptostroboides, in the northwest corner of the park, if you stand facing Allyndale on the loop around the pond. As many years as I’ve walked the park, for some reason this time they caught my eye. Dawn Redwoods have a unique and interesting history. They were brought to the United States in the 1940’s for landscape design and planting. They thrive in areas that are wet and moist and will grow quickly and up to 200 feet in height. Currently, they are in the endangered and threatened categories, even though they grow quickly and drop cones, hence they are in the conifer family. Their cones are small and square shaped. They were believed to be extinct until the 20th century when a group of botanists “discovered” them in Hubei province of China. In Chinese, their name is “water fir”. They are distant cousins to the redwoods in California, and the shortest in the extended family. The triplets in Longbrook have unique bark patterns and colorings, another distinguishing feature of Dawn Redwoods. They are described as “groovy” and can have different shades of bark all on one tree.

The “Where Shade Hits the Pavement” summit held at Brisbane Powerhouse in March 2024 brought together professionals working in forestry, stormwater research, ecology science, product innovation, engineering, planning, green architecture and design. Recordings of the speaker presentations are available online at the City Green Institute https://lnkd.in/gu8dD9vT >>> What’s this got to do with verge gardens? Like the climate scientists, the urban planners, the transport planners, the people who design initiatives like Shaping SEQ 2023, the presenters in this summit have a lot of knowledge and passion. To my mind, they are some of our true environmentalists because they understand better than the rest of us the science behind what is happening with climate change and make it their work to address the challenges. They know what we need to do. If only people would listen. This challenge is often called a communication challenge but that can be misleading. If communication is thought of as simply packaging a message so other people will accept it, or to raise awareness, or protest, or just shout into the ether on social media, we aren’t going to get far. We won’t get the changes we need until the majority of the public demand it and vote accordingly. Change has to be mainstream. We won’t get green streets until we change the culture that means residents don’t care about street trees, shade, or biodiversity. We all have to walk the talk. What we really have is a culture change challenge. It’s not about facts and information, it’s about values and priorities, and interlinking systems. It’s the epitome of a complex or wicked problem. Learn more about the import work that Dr. Seana Walsh is doing to protect palm trees from the Coconut Rhinoceros Beetle. Thanks Dr. Walsh for being a Plant Hero!
Coconut rhinoceros beetles sound and look like something straight out of a 1950s science fiction movie. These beetles are very real and pose a danger to palm trees in our member gardens in Hawai’i. The National Tropical Botanical Garden has the largest living collection of native Hawaiian palm trees in the world. Dr. Seana Walsh is the Conservation Scientist & Living Collection Curator and was recently interviewed by Island News. Dr. Walsh said the beetles are causing the palm trees to be listed as endangered. The beetles fly into the top of the trees and get up in the crown. Then the beetles bore into the heart of the palm and feed on the plant tissue. The boring eventually kills the palm trees. Staff have been busy prioritizing which palms are the most important to save. Once they determine the ones to save, they wrap netting around the palms. The net acts as a mechanical barrier preventing the beetles from eating at the crown. We hope the netting works well for our member gardens in Hawai’i. "The main concern is the potential loss of these species, our cultural heritage," Dr. Walsh shared with Island News.
