The number of recent conversations about how to enter the ETF market are really ramping up, which is a sure sign of what is going on under the surface, but each discussion always goes the same way i.e. • "It seems like launching our own ETF business is very complicated and is going to take a really long time" • "Working with a white label firm seems more tempting and is less of a commitment in case things don't work out" • "We can always take over the platform down the line, right" Whether these statements are true or false is debatable but think about this How many of the major ETF providers work off a white label platform? The answer is NONE. Not a single one. That should tell you a lot if you are a large asset manager contemplating entering the ETF market, the most important of all is BEING SUCCESSFUL REQUIRES COMMITMENT. A "lets see how it goes" strategy is only going to get you into trouble. There are no shortcuts and no quick wins, regardless of what you might be told. By all means choose the entrance strategy that works best for you, BUT do your homework, be sure of your facts and get independent advice.
