PRESCRIBING NEW MEDICINE For Corporate Africa to thrive, equipping boards with the rudimentaries of Corporate Sustainability is crucial. If a doctor prescribes old medicine, a patient's condition will continue to deteriorate. If boards approve and oversee corporate strategies based on old business models, businesses will continue to perform at suboptimal levels. They will continue moving at the pace and gait of an old, tired horse. Progressive boards infuse the company leadership with urgency. They increase the pace of the organization. They accept targeted outcomes set at optimal levels, and nothing less. They understand the gravity of that board seat. Because it is their responsibility to enhance the prosperity, and safeguard the well-being of all stakeholders. It is their fiduciary duty. Opioid settlement funds should not be spent on interventions that focus on arrests and punishment. Aggressive law enforcement can undermine public health programs, for example, by confiscating sterile drug use equipment and naloxone, which puts people at greater risk of infectious diseases and overdose. When individuals are afraid of being arrested, they’re less likely to call 911 in overdose emergencies. Moreover, there is a growing body of evidence that law enforcement operations, such as drug seizures, can result in increased overdose. Just as opioid settlement funds should not go to law enforcement coffers, they should not be used to support capital expenditures, expansion, or renovation of jails and prisons. Studies show a markedly increased risk of overdose following incarceration.
