Reflecting on a pivotal moment in my career journey: in 2011, freshly minted as a physician, I found myself navigating the transition from academia to industry. It was then that I encountered a transformative figure who would leave an indelible mark on both my professional trajectory and personal growth. Stephane Bentolila was the visionary General Manager of Servier Argentina. Amidst the dynamic landscape of the pharmaceutical industry, he recognized potential in me and extended a guiding hand. His belief in my capabilities not only secured my role as a Marketing leader for the Cardiometabolic Franchise but also ignited a journey of mentorship and empowerment. Throughout my tenure, Stephane's unwavering support served as a beacon, particularly during the initial stages of onboarding when uncertainty loomed large. He encouraged calculated risks, fostering an environment where failure was embraced as a stepping stone to growth. Under his tutelage, I gleaned invaluable insights and honed skills that continue to shape my approach to this day. We met each other this week at the #ESC #HeartFailure Congress (after almost 10 years). It was an opportunity to share my profound gratitude for Stephane's intuition and boldness in championing emerging talent like myself. His willingness to look beyond the conventional pool of candidates speaks volumes about the transformative power of visionary leadership. To fellow leaders, I pose a question: are you entrusting your instincts to unearth untapped potential or adhering to the status quo?

Wonderful afternoon at the inaugural Canada-UK Council Young and Emerging Leadership Forum last Saturday, focussed on the theme for this year’s Colloquium, Fairer Society, Healthier Lives: Reducing Unequal Health Outcomes in the UK and Canada. Thank you to Nicolas Maclean CMG for his introduction to the work of the CUKC. With participants from both countries, joining in-person and online, it was a stimulating afternoon of discussion on the challenges of health inequalities, and ways to improve health outcomes. We were thrilled that Professor Sir Michael Marmot delivered the keynote address speaking to his career defining the key determinants of health and seeking to improve health inequities at home and abroad; an excellent launchpad for the rest of the afternoon. Our 3 panelists provided fascinating insights into their work: Emma Pawson on the roll-out of the Mayor of London’s free schools meal programme, Dr. Jasmine Leonce addressed maternal health inequalities in minority communities, and Aisha Cuthbert spoke about tackling loneliness and her experience as a councillor. The ensuing discussion, which had a strong focus on practical and sustainable action, was skilfully moderated by David Jones. We’ll be reflecting and following up on the discussion over the next months, ahead of the Canada-UK Colloquium in Cardiff this December. Key takeaways were: - Local action can be easier to start and sustain than national efforts, and can provide a proving ground for efforts which can then be duplicated or expanded - There is no one-size-fits-all approach. Even within specific programmes, there needs to be flexibility and variation to meet different communities’ or individual’s needs - Data and evidence collection are crucial – to know whether initiatives are working, and to make the case for funding. - Support for staff and staff equity is also key. Efforts for change can’t be successful if the people trying to deliver them are unsupported. I’m grateful to my co-convenor, Thomas Nightingale, to CUKC co-Chairs Anthony Cary CMG and Nicolas Maclean CMG, to Prof Jim Norton for tech support, to David Jones, to Professor Kingsley Abbott & the Institute of Commonwealth Studies for hosting us at Senate House, and to all the emerging leaders who participated in the Forum.
