The story of my Catalan ancestors, the Ferran and Subira families, is a testament to the resilience, determination, and pursuit of freedom that defines the Catalan people. Fleeing Franco's oppressive regime during the Spanish Civil War, they embarked on a courageous journey from Catalonia to seek refuge in pre-Castro Cuba, where they began rebuilding their lives, preserving their Catalan heritage amidst a foreign land. Their quest for a brighter future took them to pre-Castro Cuba, where they established themselves and worked hard to create a new life. However, in 1961, when Castro took over in a coup, they found themselves fleeing communism once more, leading them to seek exile in Miami, Florida, where I was born. The vibrant Cuban exile community in Miami welcomed the Catalan families with open arms, offering them a new beginning in a land that embraced their resilience and the values they held dear. My personal connection to this story reflects the Catalan character, valuing hard work, honesty, and respect for others. Growing up in Miami, I inherited the Catalan appreciation for diversity, forging lifelong friendships and embracing the unique blend of cultures that define my hometown. This tale of my family's journey from Catalonia to pre-Castro Cuba and then to exile in Miami is more than just history—it's a living legacy of bravery and adaptability, a story of escaping oppression not once, but twice, and it continues to shape my character, influencing how I approach life and blending the best of two worlds into a unique and inspiring narrative. https://lnkd.in/g5aC5jfY

As part of Asian Pacific American Heritage Month, I wanted to bring attention and spotlight some stories that are inspiring, illuminating or highlighting struggles within the community. I love the PBS NewsHour recent story on Gulf Coast Vietnamese Americans reinventing their story in innovative ways that not only pay homage to their culture and heritage but also exemplifying resiliency as shown in the piece. Parts that I found resonated with me was when the artist, Christian Dinh, described how his grandmother's advice on cooking fish was "you'll know when the fish is ready, when the eyeballs turn white" and creating a giant longevity bowl reminiscent of bowls commonly found at family tables (albeit normal size). These were some of the things I've experience in my own Chinese household. The key takeaway this piece threaded through from all these experiences and stories was of resiliency. Whether it is having to leave your homeland to a foreign place to start anew, surviving through tragedy and misfortune only to come back stronger or keeping traditions and heritage alive through arts and culture. It all comes from a place of love and I can see that especially poignant and unique in the Asian and Asian American experience even though we may not verbally express it. It shows through our work and perseverance. I see many of these stories in my parent's journey to provide an opportunity for my siblings and me; and it's this implicit love that makes me resilient in the face of hardship and I hope to come out stronger on the other end. What are stories from your family or heritage that gives you the courage and strength to rewrite tragedy into hope? What strengths do you find looking at your family, history and heritage? #AsianPacificAmericanHeritageMonth #apahm #AsianAmericanPacificIslanderMonth #aapi #asian #asianamerican #aapiheritagemonth #celebrateaapi #aapihistorymonth #asiancommunity https://lnkd.in/gEvqeEuQ

German American Heritage Month in recognition of the founding of Germantown, Pennsylvania in October 1683. Fifteen percent of Americans are of German descent, which is the largest ancestral group in the United States. This Indigenous People’s Day, we must acknowledge the painful history of genocide while also celebrating the resilience that shapes the identities of Indigenous tribes and their ancestors. Many Americans are led to believe that Columbus was the first European to arrive in the Americas. Vikings, Polynesians, and African, and Chinese explorers actually preceded him. Saying that Columbus discovered America is misleading and excludes Native and Latinx people from a narrative in which they should be centered. We realize how much it matters to honor the rich cultures, histories, and contributions of Indigenous communities. Here are just some respectful ways you can celebrate Indigenous People today: 💜Challenge the narrative that you’ve been taught, and educate. Read books, listen to music, watch documentaries, etc. 💜Amplify Native voices. Listen to their narratives. 💜Learn about Indigenous cultures. Learn about what Indigenous land you’re on, the languages, and ways of life. 💜Shop Indigenous-owned businesses! Let's use this day to amplify Indigenous voices, honor their resilience, and embrace the beauty of diversity. 💜 #columbusday #indigenouspeoplesday
