In the small town of Sisters, Oregon, Stitchin' Post quilt shop has spent nearly 50 years building a fun community around quilting. Every summer since 1975, founder Jean Wells has hosted a huge Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show that brings together quilters from across the country. But Stitchin' Post also connects quilters online all year long. They share quilting tips and patterns on their forums and social media for fans near and far. Fans share photos of projects and ask each other questions - new friendships form over a shared love of quilts. They work hard to create spaces where quilters can "stitch" together new bonds - both online and in the real world. Here's what they focus on: 1. Pick something people are excited about - for them, it's quilts! 2. Bring people together both virtually and at in-person meetups.   3. Encourage friends to chat, share ideas, and have fun. With some creativity, retailers can make their own communities centered around common hobbies, interests, or values. After all, people want to share experiences. Why not give them places for that?

Over on our blog this week, we had an explore of different things you can do with the kids during the school holidays and thought we'd share one of them here today. It's a quintessential forest school (and indeed, childhood) classic - den building! As an activity, den building is free, easy, keeps kids entertained for hours and can be done inside or out! If you’ve got the time and can access them, head to your local woods (for our Devon friends Haldon Forest, Mamhead Woods, Ashclyst Forest, Stover, and Hembury Woods are all great spots for this) and do some proper Forest School den building. If you want to go a step further, you can take a picnic blanket and snacks and when the den is compete, can sit in for a bite to eat – the kids will be thrilled!  However, if the weather is bad (thank you Storm Kathleen) or you’ve got to work, you can make this an indoor activity and the kids will still have a blast. Grab some blankets, chairs, tent poles, sheets…whatever you can find; then clear a space and let their imaginations go wild! The thing that we’ve observed about den building is that one the den is built, the fun isn’t over – they then tend to use that as a base for the rest of the day for their adventures and play. The Tree Catwalk Very nice educational activity for any group. When being in nature or when planting trees, there are various ways to connect with the life surrounding you. One thing can be to learn names of a plant or a tree (fighting 'plant blindness') A logical next step is to learn some characteristics of course. What is typical for this tree? How is it traditionally used? Where does its name come from and what does it mean? What other life does this tree attract? Does it appear in any mythology or local saga's? Of course we hope to help people to 'see with different eyes'. Beauty and stories are available everywhere, as long as we have trees an plants around us. Yes, life is a catwalk. But sometimes a show is only a real show when there is trees involved :) What is the latest thing that you learnt about nature? And how was that?
