We expect the communities we invest the least in to be the ones to step up and shoulder the most complex issues. While wealthier communities fight the hardest against policies that will make real and lasting change, like zoning reform. We cannot expect under resourced communities to keep opening their doors while wealthier communities shut theirs. “Of the 94 communities hosting emergency shelters, more than half have a median household income below $100,000, while just nine of those communities — including Acton, Concord, and Lexington — have household incomes above $150,000.” And all of this is happening while Milton approaches a town vote that may fly in the face of the state mandate for zoning reform for MBTA communities. After Braintree residents killed a plan that would have created 500 additional units of housing. After Newton ousted a city councilor that led efforts to create new housing developments. Over and over again, suburban communities shut down efforts to create any housing, emergency or long term. Suburban communities are driving our housing crisis by refusing to do our share. Food Insecurity and Housing Instability Are Inextricably Linked About 10.4 million (25.4 percent of renter-occupied units) are spending half or more of their incomes on shelter, leaving families without adequate resources to pay for food. This depletion of family resources to cover rent helps explain the intersection of hunger and housing instability as well as the need for anti-hunger stakeholders to champion polices to support affordable housing. Sarasota and Bradenton are no exception. Until affordable housing is available, the Mayors' Feed the Hungry Program reaches out to help feed those in need.

“A lot of communities want their streets to be cleaned up and available to everyone again, and that’s a reasonable ask,” she says. “This is a tough conversation, because everybody wants the same outcome. We just don’t have the resources to provide that outcome.” The challenge with the growth of these shelters, and the central question about their use, comes down to the final goals and finances. Cities need to figure out how to deploy them in a manner that creates a suitably rapid and well-organized path to permanent housing, and in doing so not strain municipal resources or take funding away from the end goal of permanent housing. See the chart below for some more migration facts. SB County had a net negative flow of income from migration; RIV had a net positive flow. Riverside attracts significantly higher-income households than San Bernardino, even from LA (!). The average AGI of LA households into Riverside was $82,122.26; into San Bernardino, it was $63,209. The top non-CA source of in-migrants into San Bernardino County was Clark County, NV, followed by Maricopa (AZ). Riverside also lists Clark and Maricopa counties as top outside-CA sources. The third top destination of San Bernardino out-migrants was Clark County, NV; other non-CA counties in the top 10 include Maricopa and Mohave (AZ) and Harris and Bexar County (TX). Houston is in Harris and San Antonio is in Bexar.

There are few, if any, more effective ways to cut down on street homelessness in the five boroughs than building safe, functional SROs. Luckily, both Mayor Eric Adams and Gov. Kathy Hochul support the concept, and the Adams administration is attempting a rezoning that would pave the way for more SRO construction. Both Democrats now understand the story of homelessness in New York is rather straightforward. Most of the poor and destitute found refuge in SROs — very cheap single rooms in apartment buildings or hotels that offered week-to-week or month-to-month housing. #nycrealestate #migrants #housingmarket

Two years ago, I met Ludia, who had been living in and out of shelters with her grandsons for months, unable to find an apartment where her housing voucher could be accepted. Recent research shows that nearly half of California’s homeless population is over 50 years old, and metro-specific homelessness rates are driven overwhelmingly by the scarcity of affordable housing supply. As I've urged in my online book, Congress must streamline tax credit financing of housing, and eliminate current statutory barriers to using federal vouchers in more innovative, less costly housing projects, such as the prefabricated, quick-build projects we see in Mountain View, Redwood City, and San Jose.
