David Cameron’s surprise return to Downing Street this week has really got me thinking about how often I see candidates return to their all-to-familiar and safe space of their previous employer after pursuing other opportunities, or even worse, the dreaded counter offers. Of course, every situation is different and there may be valid reasons to stay with a current employer, or even return to the workplace after 7 years. However, in my experience and after doing some research, it’s not always the right decision: ◼️ Did you know, 80% of employees who accept a counter offer end up leaving within the next six months. No matter how attractive the counter offer package is (higher salary, opportunities to grow, promised promotions, the business don’t want to lose you), the underlying issues that made someone look for a new job in the first place are not usually resolved by a counteroffer. They still feel dissatisfied, unappreciated, or bored in their role. ◼️ Accepting a counter offer can damage the trust and relationship with your current employer. They may see you as disloyal, opportunistic, or greedy. Candidates I work with who have taken a counter offer often come back to me telling me they feel as though their bridges have been burned, or that their employer is questioning their commitment, feel a little resentment towards them, or even have a feeling their employer is looking for their replacement for them behind their backs. ◼️ Of course, accepting a counter offer can also hurt the reputation and relationship you have with the potential employer who offered you your new role. It's possible that company are no longer interested in having you join the team if you try and return to them several weeks-months down the line finding someone they feel has shown more interest and enthusiasm to the business. Torn between loyalty and new opportunities, you chose to stay but quickly realized the work environment hadn't changed.
