Engineering Writer or Systems Engineer? If your organization were seeking to develop a requirements document, a deployment guide, a system overview document, an ICD and a technical operator's manual, would you hire a Systems Engineer or an Engineering Writer? Both roles require an understanding of the system, an engineering background, and the ability to present their knowledge of your system through documentation. So, the answer is... When a Program Manager hears that we are a 'technical documentation' company, they often assume that we are only Technical Writers and Editors. Yes, but there is much more to the MSD story.... 1. We are systems engineers that contribute to the processes behind the documentation including configuration management, requirements development, training plans, and end-user experience. 2. We assess your documentation against the client's needs, your SOW and RVTM, and your operator's mission. 3. We learn to operate your system to ensure the documentation thoroughly represents the system's functions and capabilities. 4. We delve into the problems that your clients are experiencing with system operations and understandings and look to resolve them through the documentation mechanisms. META-SYSTEMS DOCUMENTATION, Inc. (MSD) is NOT your run-of-the mill group of tech writers. Want to know more? Visit our website, read our story and submit our 8-Pt. ASSESSMENT. There is a good chance we understand your situation and already have a solution in mind. Let's start a conversation. https://www.msd-corp.com #defensecontractor #programmanager #technicalwriter #engineering #engineeringwriter

#Hardware_TechPubs #Harware_Technical_Documentation I forgot to mention this information… There are two aspects of h/w technical documentation: · Author · Illustrator Depending on the organization, the two aspects are either handled by two teams or individual technical writers work on both these aspects for their projects. Authoring is similar for both h/w and s/w technical writing. A deviation about images. Every image can be categorized into two buckets: · Vector images: Do not distort even when you zoom the image to the max. · Raster images: Get pixelated when you zoom the image. Note: Occasionally, you do get to see mixed images. These contain both vector and raster attributes. Illustrations are 2-dimensional line drawings (vector images) which indicate any one of the following: · Product features · Dimensions · Installation views · Exploded view · Flow chart · Wiring diagrams · Cable connections · Etc. H/w tech writers believe in the adage “A picture is worth a thousand words”. All the h/w technical documents have a healthy mix of text and illustrations. Here are some of the tools used to create vector illustrations: · Adobe Illustrator · CorelDraw · Arbortext IsoDraw 2/n To be continued… Link to 1/n: https://lnkd.in/gxDwJm9Q

Hardware (h/w) technical documentation began during the Pre-Industrial Revolution, 384-322 BC! Google also informed me that software technical documentation began sometime in 1949. Hi, I am an experienced technical writer. I have worked in software and hardware domains, most of which (around 80%) are on hardware products. The majority of the posts on technical communication are about the software domain. I plan to shed some of my know-how on hardware documentation as a series. The consolidation of this may also be published as an article. I am not sure as of now. #Hardware_TechPubs #Harware_Technical_Documentation #TechPubs Link to 3/n: https://lnkd.in/drAxX9fz What is an installation manual? Installation or Install manual instructs the end-user on installing the product. In many cases, the installation will be done by trained professionals. The document may include the following sections: · Package contents: The components/accessories/parts shipped with the product and their respective quantities. It can be depicted using illustrations or text or both. · Safety: Informs the potential hazards while assembling the product. · Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Suggests the PPE to be worn by the installer to protect themselves from the potential hazards. Examples of PPE are hard hats, safety shoes, safety goggles, etc. · Tools required: The tools needed to install the product. · Installation: Provides step-by-step instructions to install the product. In case the product can be installed in more than one way, the instructions would specify all the different ways of installing the product. The components of the product are shown in an exploded view, connected by dashed lines showing the assembly of components with one another. The illustrations may come with instructions when the assembly process is complex. If the installation is simple, it can be a one-page illustration-only document. Irrespective of the manual type, some information is standard. The standard information varies from company to company. It may include the part number (of the manual), revision date, copyright info, support/contact information, legal information, etc. 4/n To be continued…

⚠️𝐈𝐧𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐞𝐭𝐞 𝐢𝐧𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧! Recently, I had the incredible opportunity to work on the service manual for an Environmental Chambers. 🌡️🔬 Our team received invaluable input from Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) to create comprehensive manuals. Personally, I visited the lab to capture images of the alpha unit, an experience I can't wait to share in future posts! 😜 As we dive into the manual creation process using #AdobeFrameMaker, I couldn't help but notice a crucial detail missing in the part assembly and disassembly section— switching off and disconnecting the device from all electrical connections before servicing. 🔌⚡ While it might seem obvious to some, as technical writers, we strive for completeness without assumptions. Our commitment is to provide users with n-to-n information, leaving no room for oversight. We understand the importance of #safety and want to ensure every user has the necessary details for a seamless #experience with our products. We prioritize user education and satisfaction. We care about our users, value their safety, and continuously work towards designing the best #userexperience through thorough documentation. 📚 Stay tuned for more updates on this exciting project and behind-the-scenes glimpses of my lab adventures! 🚵♀️ Thanks for reading. I'm here to share my experiences and insights, and I'd love to connect with you! #Hardware_TechPubs #Harware_Technical_Documentation Link to 2/n: https://lnkd.in/gYByYesH Here is a brief on the various guides/manuals of h/w documentation. · Installation manual/guide: Contains instructions to install the product. If the installation is simple, it may be an illustrations-only document. Complex installations require some amount of text. This document is usually illustration-heavy. · User manual/guide: This is a comprehensive document. Contains safety, specifications, installation, operations, alarms and indicators, troubleshooting, warranty, and other information. · Illustrated Parts Catalogue (IPC): If the product is huge (like an automobile) and has replaceable parts, companies come out with IPCs. IPC is a document where sub-assemblies of the product are shown in exploded views, each exploded part has a callout. Each callout is then mentioned with a part number, name, description, and quantity. · Safety manual/guide: Contains safety instructions on the possible hazards associated with the product. It warns the user/operator about potential risks if the safety instructions aren’t followed. The safety messages are driven by ISO or ANSI standards (more on this later). · Specifications/Datasheet: Contains the technical specifications of the product. It helps the user to understand the product and its limitations. 3/n To be continued…

After 30+ years in the documentation business, we can honestly say that most clients make their technical documentation a priority when they're facing a "documentation emergency." What is a "documentation emergency" you may ask? --It is best described as needing to deliver a documentation product, despite being: (1) Out of Time, (2) Out of Budget, (3) Out of Resources, or (4) All the above. Of course, we'll also support those clients that proactively document their systems just because it's the best way to engineer a system. Contact MSD's DocuDr. the next time you're having a Documentation Emergency (or even if you're not).
