📢 Many of our learners lack confidence in speaking English. We know that, thank you! 😉 We are encouraged to do what we can do build confidence - but the notion of building confidence can sound a bit vague, a bit hippy dippy, a bit blah blah blah, right? But the good news is that there are concrete actions that we can take to set up our learners to develop their confidence. One top tip is to ensure that they are working at the right level of challenge - and to do this, there are a number of actions we can take: 💡 make sure you know what level your students are at. This might mean giving them a placement test at the start of the course or speaking to the teacher who had them last year 💡 then develop lessons that are at an appropriate level of challenge. Too easy and the students will not make progress. Too difficult and they will fail over and over again - and convince themselves that they are "just no good at English". We have developed the Global Scale of English to support teachers in identifying learning objectives, grammar and vocabulary at appropriate levels of challenge. Let them focus on putting it all together in spoken production or interaction. If they need to search for the correct word, phrase or tense, they will not be able to focus on the real goal of the lesson - speaking. It would be even better if there is one specifically designed to explicitly integrate the English language curriculum standards and inculcate a civic mindset in our students.
