Details regarding the recent opening of the Fort Carroll Temporary Alternate Channel, the third alternate channel, this one with a 20 foot depth. My prayers are for all casualties. 1. In case the ship was going full astern that will be the reason for STBD swing. Wrong decision because of panic. The ship has sufficient speed to pass the bridge safely, but not a distance to stop. 2. Rudder angle indicator if blocked, should never happen. On old pax ship. I experienced that big problem during the blackout. 3. From the wheelhouse on the container ship is a very limited View therefore maneuvering should be carried out from the wing but if that was available? (in emergency running around) 4. There is a shipowner/management responsibility to have sufficient numbers of crew/off. on board. This is a problem on so many big ships during maneuvering and/or emergencies. With sufficient crew, this may never happened. 5. If all officers and wheelmen were sufficiently experienced for this job. 6. Drug/alco policy if observed 7. If this ship has two electricians, probably not. 8. If the ship has regular spare parts needed. Conclusion- there are more points like class etc.
