Think Michigan State, the University of Kentucky, and Penn State. 💼 Career Success Ingredients: Life skills and initiative matter more than the college name. A single event won't gift your students lasting, sustainable skills, no matter how fantastic that program is. Experience is one of those things that is hard to quantify until you have it! It was Levi's 18th Birthday yesterday. I am so thankful to God for Levi and the blessing he is to so many people. He has grown up into a wonderful young man who is full of character, life and talent, with a heart centred on the things that matter. We are so proud of him in many ways and yet as I look at Levi I realise he will have to go through the same process in the years ahead, of learning from others and building his own experience as he goes through life. Parenting is one of the many areas in life most of us might wish we knew then what we know now! I wish I'd worried less, loved more, taken advice better, certainly invested more time and been more gracious in my parenting. Like me, Levi will make mistakes, screw up, have regrets, wish he listened more etc. Life somehow never let's us quite arrive. Just as we learn and build our experience, we move on to the next phase of life or new role at work. Levi and his generation have so many more tools, options, opportunities to learn than 30 years ago. How exciting to see how they use this and how the world of learning contributes to their future. It's why I love the education businesses and communities I'm involved with. From learning with others in peer groups like MD2MD to vocational learning on the job with Knovia, Paragon Skills Tempdent. From collaborative online leadership learning with MasterStart to growing in faith together with the community at North Swindon Baptist Church. Learning and gaining that 'difficult to quantify' experience, is all part of what makes us human and makes life the challenging adventure it is! #humanconnection #learning #experience #peergroups #apprenticeships #18thBirthday Great Western Academy Thomas Pike Joshua Nurcombe-Pike James Pike

"You've got to build your kid's narrative for college!" Ever heard that and wondered what it even means? 🤔 Let's cut through the jargon and get real. How about reframing it to: Do things that matter. Or more tactically: "Do things of substance, consistently, over time." Why? Because meaningful activities naturally create stories: - Diving deep into clubs you care about - Pushing yourself in competitions - Making a real difference through volunteering - Getting hands-on with internships Commit to these genuinely and in-depth. The narrative? It'll write itself. Feeling lost on where to start? You're not alone. Join me and my co-founder Alec for a Curious Cardinals workshop we're leading on navigating the high school journey. We'll talk about balancing authenticity and strategy when it comes to college prep. 🔗 RSVP link in comments! #staycurious #lifelonglearning #highschool

Hi, I'm the statistic. 👋 It's Neurodiversity Celebration Week, and I'm proud to say I'm an apprentice for an organisation that doesn't just celebrate neurodiversity for a week, but all year long. Reasons why I'd recommend apprenticeships to other neurodiverse people... ✅ The learning is hands-on, and you can directly apply it. ✅ You have access to mentors / a tutor. ✅ There's structure... ✅ ... but you still have wiggle room to be innovative, experimental, and play to your strengths (the most important thing). I can't speak for every neurodiverse person, but if the learning is largely theoretical, or I don't understand my 'why', I tend to switch off. It's just how my brain works! An apprenticeship works for me because not only does it expand my knowledge and teach me new things, but it's directly transferable to my career and the real world. If you're on the fence about starting one, then this is your sign. Shaw Trust Youth Shaw Trust #neurodiversityatwork #neurodiversitycelebrationweek

The academic production of GCSEs ➡️A levels ➡️ Uni isn't for everyone. Some #children & #youngpeople can use their hands better than their brains. ESPECIALLY if they aren't given the best start in life . So I stand with Gary Laybourne & the Coach Core Foundation recognising #nationalapprenticeshipweek
Happy #nationalapprenticeshipweek 🥳 This week, we will be unashamedly spotlighting the amazing impact of Coach Core Foundation apprentices and our wider teams! At Coach Core, we call the use of community sports apprenticeships our 'triple threat'!... ✅their life chances and future prospects meaningfully enhanced. ✅new diverse talent benefitting their employers. ✅wider community impact through the sport and physical activity these local, inspiring young role models are delivering. We've got news and updates all week but to kick off, and demonstrate the work we do with so many brilliant Active Partnerships, here is 'Exhibit A' and our now second cohort working with Active Sussex https://lnkd.in/eDqQY5fD

Is university the best option these days ❓ Recently, I overhead a conversation my eldest daughter (14yo) had with a friend. Despite just starting her GCSEs, they were discussing which university to go to and what course to do and how confusing it was deciding. 🎓 I found this really interesting as I had not mentioned university as being the path set in stone for her and it got me wondering where she got the idea that university was the best option. As the first person in my family to go to university, the very minimal careers advice I had in school made it clear that the only two options after finishing sixth form were go to university or get a job. So off to university I went, largely as I had no idea what career I wanted to pursue, and I was not mentally prepared for the big, scary world of work 😁 Upon completion of my three years at the University of Chichester studying Sport Science specialising in Sport Psychology, I had a moment of realisation that actually, it was very difficult to forge a career in Sport Psychology, something that nobody advised me at any point in my three years studying (I probably should have asked 😀). I didn't even know where to start! After a couple of years of moving between low paid and quite menial sport related jobs, I decided enough was enough, and I went back to university to obtain my PGCE to become a teacher and embark on a proper career. 👟 I don't regret my choices as I had a fantastic time at university and learned a great deal and as a teacher, I had a wonderful 19 year career which was very fulfilling. 👨🏫 But, is university the best option these days? I am in a lucky position in my job where I have insight into the vast range of other options such as BTEC Higher Nationals, degree apprenticeships and other work-based learning options. Are the days numbered for universities as an institution due to these many alternatives? Is work-based learning the future? 🔚 I have already started discussions with my daughter about these other options. I think I have confused her even more. 😂 Congratulations if you have managed to reach the end of my life story so far 🤣, I would love to hear your thoughts. #HigherEducation #HigherNationals #Apprenticeships #CareersAdvice #CareerChoices Pearson BTEC and Apprenticeships
