Today, Mercy Corps, along with several other international humanitarian aid organizations, including Save the Children, Oxfam and others, issued this statement in response to the call for over 1 million Palestinians to leave northern Gaza and relocate within 24 hours. In our statement we issue an urgent plea to rescind this order to avoid an unprecedented humanitarian crisis. https://lnkd.in/gGmd2JRx Given the unprecedented scale of the current humanitarian crisis, we anticipate billions of dollars in aid will be required to meet the immediate response and longer-term rebuilding needs of communities across Gaza. Mercy Corps is preparing to respond to rising humanitarian needs by coordinating with the UN and local agencies. We expect to significantly ramp up lifesaving assistance which will likely focus on provision of essential items such as clean water, food, hygiene supplies, shelter materials, and eventually cash and other needed assistance. In Gaza, the needs are staggering and will only continue to increase if the hostilities persist. Civilians are facing an unprecedented level of indignity, misery, and suffering. They are in desperate need of food, water, shelter, and medical care, with no sense of safety. In this hour of serious humanitarian crisis, I call on all parties to turn these urgent asks into powerful actions: - Protect civilians and healthcare workers. - Grant unhindered and safe access to reach all parts of Gaza - Scale up aid efforts in Gaza. I also reiterate my call to release the hostages immediately. Humanitarian assistance will help but protection to civilians and a sustainable political solution is urgently needed to prevent the destruction of Gaza and its people.

Tens of thousands have fled their homes in Gaza, leaving their possessions behind to seek refuge wherever they can find it, not knowing whether they will have a home to return to. Others have no choice but to stay where they are, trapped by the unfolding carnage around them. They are tired, hungry and scared. They need our support now. Commissioner General of UNRWA: “As Gaza remains under heavy bombardment with Israel tightening its grip over the overpopulated Strip, it is left to the UN and humanitarians to protect civilians. “The call from Israeli Forces to move more than 1,000,000 civilians living in northern Gaza within 24 hours is horrendous. This will only lead to unprecedented levels of misery and further push people in Gaza into the abyss. “Since 7 October, over 423,000 people have already been displaced. Of them, more than 270,000 have taken refuge in UNRWA shelters, where basic food, medicine and support is provided to retain dignity and a glimmer of hope. “The scale and speed of the unfolding humanitarian crisis is bone-chilling. Gaza is fast becoming a hell hole and is on the brink of collapse.  “There is no exception, all parties must uphold the laws of war; humanitarian assistance must be provided at all times to civilians. “In Gaza, more than 2,000,000 people are caught up in this conflict. 500 Palestinian Children Killed in Gaza Gaza Under Attack By Days of Palestine - October 13, 2023 On the seventh day of the Israeli military campaign in the Gaza Strip, the grim tally of Palestinian children who have lost their lives reached 500. According to a report from the Ministry of Health in Gaza, during the same period, 1,644 children were injured, further underscoring the devastating impact of the ongoing aggression. The total number of casualties has now climbed to 1,537, with thousands more suffering from injuries. Israeli warplanes continue relentless and devastating bombing of this besieged territory, often without warning, leading to the destruction of entire buildings and the loss of innocent lives. Compounding this dire situation, Israel has imposed a severe blockade on Gaza, severely restricting access to water, electricity, fuel, and essential food supplies. This situation is a clear precursor to a burgeoning humanitarian catastrophe. The World Health Organization has issued a plea for the establishment of a secure corridor to ensure the delivery of crucial humanitarian and medical aid to Gaza, recognizing the urgency of the situation. Norwegian Foreign Minister Anniken Huitfeldt and Irish Prime Minister Leo Varadkar have strongly condemned the Israeli blockade on Gaza, deeming it “unacceptable.” They have characterized this blockade as a form of “collective punishment” and have called for the immediate opening of a safe passage to Gaza for humanitarian assistance.
