We're facing an unprecedented global displacement crisis as raging conflicts and fallout from climate change uproot millions from their homes, communities and countries. UNHCR estimates that 120 million people around the world were displaced as of April of this year, which is double the number 10 years ago. Meanwhile, traditional aid models for refugee assistance are failing under the massive and unsustainable strain on the global humanitarian system. We must go beyond business as usual and find a new way forward. On World Refugee Day, I join Dianne Calvi in urging new approaches to support refugees - including an initiative Mercy Corps and Village Enterprise are pioneering to build refugee self-reliance by helping refugees start small enterprises in displacement camps. It's crucial to address the evolving challenges in refugee assistance. The initiative by Mercy Corps and Village Enterprise to foster self-reliance through small enterprises is a commendable step towards sustainable aid. Looking forward to seeing the positive impact of these new approaches.
