January is Poverty Awareness Month, but poverty doesn't have an end date for the families experiencing it. Whether it is food insecurity, housing needs or lack of economic opportunities, families with low incomes tend to struggle year-round. #CommunityAction Agencies are working to eliminate the barriers families can face as they seek to leave generational poverty behind. Did you know that 23% of people accessing homelessness services are between the ages of 12 and 24? With the final meeting for the state budget taking place TODAY, we’re urgently calling (along with Yfoundations and Shelter NSW) on the NSW Government to fund a dedicated Child and Youth Action Plan. Trish Connolly, YFoundations CEO, says “Without a clear overarching strategy to tackle youth homelessness in Australia, the crisis is only going to get worse.” “We need to ensure that our children and young people are safe, supported and given every opportunity to thrive. But this is only a reality if a clear and targeted standalone Child and Youth Action Plan is put in place.” Children and young people need support that’s developmentally appropriate for them, such as specialist youth crisis accommodation, family reunification services, DFV support or affordable private rentals. We’re urging the NSW Government to make the right decision today and provide funding for a desperately-needed Child and Youth Action Plan to help the thousands of kids across our state who are suffering. #homelessness #homelessnessnsw #children #youngpeople #nswgovernment #policy #advocacy #community

Journeys Out of Homelessness: The Voices of Lived Experience Jamie Rife & Donald W. Burnes Hosted by Ari Barbalat How do individuals move from being homeless to finding safe, stable, and secure places to live? Can we recreate the conditions that helped them most? What policies are needed to support what worked―and to remove common obstacles? Addressing these questions, Jamie Rife and Donald Burnes start from the premise that the most important voices in efforts to end homelessness are the ones most often missing from the discussion: the voices of those with lived experience. In Journeys Out of Homelessness: The Voices of Lived Experience (Lynne Rienner, 2020), they gather the first-person stories of some who have not only survived, but thrived, going on to find positive home situations. Highlighting what we can learn from these personal stories, Rife and Burnes combine them with in-depth discussions of key themes and issues and point to the shifts necessary in current policy and practice that are essential if we are to effectively respond to a problem that has reached epic proportions. Jamie Rife is executive director of the Metro Denver Homeless Initiative. Donald W. Burnes is founder of and senior adviser to the Burnes Center on Poverty and Homelessness at the Colorado Center on Law and Poverty. In our December DEI discussion group, Impact America staff and AmeriCorps members explored the complex relationship between poverty and homelessness. Led by Courtney Riles from OneRoof, we learned about the effects of economic and policy shifts since the 1970s on housing and social services. Courtney also explained various definitions of homelessness, shedding light on the diverse demographics affected by this issue. The session reviewed the many factors that can cause individuals and families to fall below the poverty line and into homelessness, including lack of affordable housing, low income, and insufficient resources. We also learned more about One Roof—the coordinating agency for the homeless Continuum of Care of Central Alabama—and their mission to equip and empower our community to prevent and end homelessness through advocacy, education, and coordination of services. Finally, we learned that approximately 847 individuals experience homelessness on any given night in One Roof’s service area, including veterans, families, and youth. Understanding the socioeconomic factors impacting those around us and learning how to serve our communities better is vital to carrying out our mission effectively. We’re so grateful for Courtney and other community leaders who join our DEI sessions throughout the year to share their knowledge and demonstrate concrete actions that can be taken to improve community resources beyond Impact’s programs alone. 1 in 4 people seeking help are fleeing domestic violence. Homelessness services are overwhelmed by people seeking help. In 2023, 108,000 people were unable to be assisted because of shortages of staff, accommodation or other services. At Link Wentworth, we know that a Housing First approach can provide immediate, stable, long-term accommodation. During Homelessness Week, please join us in taking action on homelessness by signing the petition: https://lnkd.in/gARcp6wX Homelessness Australia #HomelessnessWeek #Homelessness #EndHomelessness

❌The November homeless figures show nothing but inaction on family homelessness. 👶🏻 An extra 114 children living in emergency accommodation at a record high of 4,105. 👩👧👧A total of 2,000 families are living in homeless accommodation. #EndChildPoverty 🏠The obvious solution is build more homes & radically reform housing policy. 📑But in the interim where is the plan to ensure children growing up in homeless accommodation have access to: 🧑🏼💼A child support worker; 🛝 A safe place to play; ✏️A place to do homework; 🍲 Cooking facilities to ensure access to nutritious food. #EndChildPoverty
