Loved this #RadicalReformers conversation with Elly De Decker from the The Bromley By Bow Centre. Elly describes what a local community centre can do when it’s providing holistic support focusing on wider determinants of health and wellbeing. The formal NHS cannot deliver health acting on it’s own - but services are still siloed and often not joined up from the perspective of the person being supported. Elly gave the example of there being no obvious connection between councils and primary care where she operates. For sure there are good intentions but it’s not filtering down to middle managers and the front line where it really matters. Elly asked the question - where does health begin and end?.. and concludes that at the minute we are too quick to rush to a medical solution of intervention. This is a theme which has come up in a number of #RadicalReformers podcast discussions. What is clear is that the formal system doesn’t value places like the Bromley By Bow Centre as it should. Community support should be a priority investment. In a time where feeling disconnected is more common than we'd like to admit, Friends for Good are making significant progress in addressing loneliness with community services that genuinely create a positive impact: - Australian Loneliness Research Foundation: The Foundation collaborates with academics, community groups, and those with lived experiences of loneliness to conduct research and raise awareness about loneliness in Australia. - Training: This training equips organisations with essential skills and knowledge to support employees facing loneliness, enhancing workforce wellbeing and productivity. - Education & awareness: We're not just talking; we're researching loneliness and spreading knowledge on creating connections. - New counselling service: Expanding our support with a counselling service to offer deeper help for those struggling with isolation. - FriendLine and FriendLine Chat: A chat line where anyone feeling lonely can find a listening ear and a friendly voice. Simple, but powerful. Adding to the urgency, the World Health Organization (WHO) has declared loneliness a "global public health concern," highlighting its effects as being as detrimental as smoking 15 cigarettes a day. This declaration underscores the vital importance of the services Friends for Good provide and the pressing need to address loneliness on a global scale. Frustratingly, it's not uncommon to invest time and effort in crafting detailed service quotes, only to be met with silence. I extend flexibility, especially for charitable organisations, encouraging open dialogue if the proposed quote doesn't align with their budget. Yet, despite the offer to negotiate fair pricing, replies remain elusive. What compounds this frustration is discovering alternative avenues for demonstrations, often through uninformed channels. However, it's vital to underscore the importance of formal training for Laughter Yoga instructors. They must navigate health concerns, assess participant energies, and facilitate emotional release safely.
