It was an honour to give this seminar to Bloomberg about maternal mental health, especially as my first seminar back from maternity leave. There was an incredible energy of highly skilled, acheiving women who are also mothers or becoming mothers, and the people who support them. Even in supportive workplaces, mothers commonly report being burdened by the pressures they absorb and put on themselves to perform, advance, and excel in our competence-mad society. Mothers are expected to work like they don’t have children and parent like they don’t have work. Yet, maternal wellness also relies on a women’s sense of fulfillment, being stretched and challenged. I myself have returned from maternity leave more ambitious than ever. The question organisations should be asking themselves is, how can we better retain highly skilled, achieving women beyond maternity leave? 22 November 2023 Mental Health Awareness In today's society, mental health has become a prevalent concern, and as a student, understanding how to manage it is exceptionally vital. Dr. Nor Mazlina's talks, resonated with me, prompting introspection on how to better care for my mental well-being. In the midst of daily challenges, have you ever considered the impact of small, intentional actions on mental health? Dr. Nor Mazlina's insights guided me towards simple yet powerful practices, such as relaxation techniques. These are now integral parts of my routine, contributing to a more resilient and balanced mental state. Overall, this experience highlighted the invaluable role of conversations around mental health. It not only equipped me with knowledge but inspired a personal commitment to prioritize and nurture my mental well-being in the face of life's complexities.

How do you incorporate conversations of spiritual aspects of wellbeing into your practice in mental health? In hospital settings Spiritual Care provides a dedicated space to hear, hold and honor all that is important to a person, with the aim to incorporate awareness for the spiritual dimension into care. Providing time, presence and deep listening, through assessment and provision of Spiritual care we are able to connect people with spiritual resources of personal importance, both of the inner and external kind, to support them through.

“Mental wellbeing is a dynamic state of complete physical, mental, social and spiritual wellbeing in which a person can develop potential, cope with normal stresses of life, work productively and creatively, build strong and positive relationships with others and contribute to their community.” (Royal Commission Victorian Mental Health System, 2021) In mental health care, it is crucial to acknowledge the interconnectedness of the four dimensions of wellbeing. In particular, the spiritual beliefs, values, and practices of consumers should be considered as they can influence the course of their mental illness. (Royal Australia New Zealand College of Psychiatrists, 2018). In the UK, 75% of suicides involve men, reflecting a significant challenge in addressing male mental health. Many men find it difficult to open up about their mental well-being, often due to societal expectations. The ingrained notion that boys should adhere to phrases like 'boys don’t cry' or 'Mummies/Daddies little soldier' fosters a culture of emotional suppression from an early age. Mothers who were younger, smoked, had lower incomes, spoke English at home, were overweight, or had emergency caesarean sections reported higher rates of depression. This underscores the importance of addressing physical health and lifestyle factors to support mental wellbeing.
