How to help with helplessness. When I spoke with Paschal Donohoe recently, he suggested that it’s important that governments start to offer citizens more than a perma crisis. I could not agree more. What can happen when there is a sense of never ending crisis, we can start to feel helpless. When we see heart shattering images of young children being pulled out of rubble every day on our phones and western polticians chasing war rather than preventing it , we can feel helpless. When you hear intellects theorising and intellectualising the death of children as ‘complex’ from the comfort of their studios it can feel helpless . It can feel lonely too. But rest assured, many of us feel this. The only remedy to helplessness is collectiveness. Is reaching out to other groups in your community that may feel they same way, and at first just connecting, but then deciding what you want to do with that helplessness. Community is powerful and we need to value it more than we have done in recent years. Peer to peer social support. #mentalhealth

Had an insightful conversation with a fellow ABA clinic today, and it brought to light a critical issue we all face: the long waitlists that prevent individuals from receiving timely services. As professionals, we share a common goal of helping the community, and it's crucial that we work together to ensure families aren't left waiting for months. I understand that some companies might hesitate, not wanting to “feed the competition,” but we need to shift our perspective. It’s not about competition—it’s about collaboration. One of my colleagues made a powerful point: "What good is it to have someone on a waitlist if we can't provide them the help they need right now?" This resonates deeply with me. Every day is crucial for the population we serve, and we need to do better. Imagine the impact if we had a network of providers we could refer parents to, ensuring that no child or adult goes without the support they desperately need. Let's strive to build that network, because together, we can make a real difference in our community.

Difficult Conversations As educators and as parents there are times when difficult conversations need to happen with our young people. A positive approach, using restorative questioning, can provide a guide to handle a discussion with care. The following questions are a guide to break open a difficult conversation: What happened? What led up to the incident? What was your involvement in this incident? Who do you think was affected and how were they affected? How were you affected? How are you feeling now about what happened? What do you think needs to happen to make things right? What could you do to restore these relationships? What support can we put in place to help you if, in the future, something similar occurs?
