Happy Juneteenth! Mental Health Cooperative is proud to celebrate this historical day! Juneteenth has become the most well-known celebration for the ending of slavery in the United States. The history of this important celebration is complex and often misunderstood. Dating back to 1865, the holiday commemorates the day when 250,000 enslaved men and women in the state of Texas, which became the last bastion for slavery during the final days of the Civil War, were declared free by the U.S. Army. As soon as the following year, local festivities were organized in African American communities to celebrate and remember the significance of that day, June 19. The celebrations continued year after year. Our offices are closed today to celebrate Juneteenth but will reopen during normal business hours on Thursday, June 20. #Juneteenth

What is often unspoken about Memorial Day is its origins in the quest for civil rights and the search for peace. According to the Office of Veterans Affairs, it originated after a series of “Decoration Days” were organized by Black and White communities to honor fallen soldiers following the Civil War. One of the most significant of these events was held by a group of Black and White abolitionists in May 1865. In 1868, General John A. Logan, the head of the Grand Army of the Republic (GAR), a politically powerful organization of Union veterans, made it an official act, speaking of the practice of floral tributes and “Decoration Days” in the context of post-war Black civil rights. It was not until after WW1 that Memorial Day began to expand to honor the dead from all American wars. As we take time today to celebrate the lives of those fallen soldiers who have served this country, let us also remember that the origin of Memorial Day is rooted in the struggle to end slavery and the search for “permanent peace. Juneteenth On June 19, 1865 the Union Army arrived in Texas and notified Texas officials that slavery was officially over. Even though the institution of slavery had existed for millennia, our nation’s birth happened at a time that world consciousness finally began to see it as unacceptable —thank God! Imagine being born in a time when slavery was just a part of life? How we have grown as a planet. And each generation will continue to grow. Ending the institution of slavery in America came at the cost of hundreds of thousands of lives, but it was the price that the supporters of slavery required. And it was the price anti-slavery soldiers paid…a necessary sacrifice for ending an evil institution that existed for thousands of years in world history at-large. #freedom #antislavery #EmancipationDay On this, I do have a theory about how our future decendants will judge first world countries for outsourcing to less developed nations for cheaper labor. Mark my words. Today’s world will be judged by tomorrow’s world for it.

On July 4, 1776 our nation was conceived, with the Declaration of Independence, the classic statement being: “We hold these truths to be self-evident , that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness. This did not ring true for persons of African descent kidnapped and enslaved and brought to the shores of America. They were not considered people, they were considered less than. Only three fifths of a person. It was not until January 1, 1863, using his war powers as President, Abraham Lincoln signed the “Emancipation Proclamation”, providing that ALL persons held as slaves within any state or designated part of a state “shall be then, thenceforward, and forever FREE,” but it would not be until June 19, 1865 two and a half years after the Proclamation with the arrival of Major General Gordon Granger’s regiment in Galveston, Texas the forces of the Union were strong enough to influence to overcome the last of the resistance. He announced both the end of the Civil War and slavery. He read “The people of Texas are are informed that in, accordance with a proclamation from the Executive of the United States, slaves are free. This would end in jubilation and celebration from the now free men, women, and children. This day celebrated for 155 years is known as the “Juneteenth” as slavery fell in the last state in America two and half years after the proclamation. #juneteenth #happyjuneteenth #freedomday

Distinctives of The Salvation Army in the church at large. There has been some discussion on this in the past, 2012 and 2015. There may be some other more recent work in this area that I have not seen. There were overlaps in the work that was done a decade or so ago. There seem to be an agreement on five key points. -The ordination and recognition of women in denominational leadership -The sacraments of baptism and communion not being a soteriological necessity -The elevation of service to suffering humanity to a core value along with evangelistic ministry -The use of the uniform among clergy and parishioners -The belief that all believers can be sanctified (made holy) What are your thoughts? Do these continue to be distinctives of The Salvation Army and are there other areas that set the Army apart that should be added to this list?

Yesterday, my kids asked what Memorial Day is for. Their question reminded me to share a powerful story from a book by a former Navy SEAL, Eric Greitens. The book consists of 23 letters from Greitens to his fellow veteran, Zach Walker. Walker, one of the toughest SEALs, believed in courage, action, and loyalty but came back from Afghanistan with PTSD and ended up in jail. Greitens' letters helped Walker navigate his struggles and find resilience. This story reminded me that everyone faces battles, some visible, some internal. Resilience is the virtue that enables us to move through hardship and become better. The book offers practical tools to build resilience, such as: - Taking responsibility for your actions and your life. - Confronting fear productively. - Finding a sense of purpose. - Taking positive action based on your identity. - Finding mentors or models who inspire you. On Memorial Day, we honor those who fought and continue to fight their own battles. #Resilience #Purpose #MemorialDay
