Podcast Co-host @Not Just Patients ┃ Patient Expert ┃ Patient engagement and rare disease consultant ┃ Board Member, Global Patient Advocacy Coalition
💜Today I had an entirely refreshing and heartening first consultation with a GP. I have several fantastic specialists whom I'm privileged to call my care team — neurologists, orthopedic surgeons, physiotherapist, ophthalmologist, pulmonologist, gynecologist, vascular surgeon. But rare diseases usually come with complications that blur the boundaries of medical disciplines. As most rare disease patients will attest, it's ridiculously difficult to find a good GP! I've been looking for one for years — someone who has oversight of all my problems, can watch out for early warning signs of long-term drug effects, is monitoring my frequent use of antibiotics to guard against anti-microbial resistance — basically a fairy godmother (or father) GP. And I had come to believe that such GPs, like fairy godmothers, don't exist. All GPs I've met have either not known or cared to learn about my rare disease, have expressed shock or pity about my condition, have washed their hands off me because I have specialists, or have been micro-focused on treating a very specific present concern like a cough. So I didn't have high hopes this morning on my way to a new GP. I met the doctor. She was over 65 and kind. She was familiar with NMOSD. She patiently listened to my history and asked about each of my specialists. She said that as a rare disease patient, I know more about my disease than she or even other experts would. I told her what I was looking for and she said she'll try to help but I'll still need my specialists. She asked if I have found a patient support group — the first time a doctor in India has ever asked me this. I told her about my patient advocacy work and she noted down details about The Sumaira Foundation, to pass on to another newly diagnosed NMOSD patient. I came away feeling cared for and hopeful. Could I have found my fairy godmother? 💫 #raredisease #NMOawarenessmonth #patientadvocacy #healthcare #primarycare *Image generated by AI*

Adenoidectomy is the surgical removal of the adenoid for reasons which include impaired breathing through the nose, chronic infections, or recurrent earaches. The effectiveness of removing the adenoids in children to improve recurrent nasal symptoms and/or nasal obstruction has not been well studied. The surgery is less commonly performed in adults in whom the adenoid is much smaller and less active than it is in children. It is most often done on an outpatient basis under general anesthesia. Post-operative pain is generally minimal and reduced by icy or cold foods. The procedure is often combined with tonsillectomy (this combination is usually called an "adenotonsillectomy" or "T&A"), for which the recovery time is an estimated 10–14 days, sometimes longer, mostly dependent on age. Journal of Internal Medicine and Emergency Research (ISSN-2582-7367) is accepting submissions for the upcoming issue.
