Great summary, Ellen Brown. Casey Means, MD was the highlight this year, and “health care - not sick care” change agents were energized unlike any presentation from past JPM, VIVE, or HLTH. It was fun! Perhaps global health ministers may pause from shaking their head at our current model of inefficient care. I spent the AM in the #primarycare sessions with a dozen CMO and CEOs from early stage disrupters. Some have novel pieces of the puzzle - Sara Pastoor, MD, MHA, FAAFP building an 30k-community of independent clinicians outside the influences of “profit generators” within the Elation Health platform, which will need to transition to #valuebasedcare from FFS and could be ripe for a new ACO model. Ankoor Shah MD, MBA, MPH from Included Health promoted the use of “healthy patient days” as the gold standard patient metric and PCP performance a more granular healthspan snapshot within the one-year budget cycle of care. Nirav Vakharia, MD from Marathon Health fortunately pulled the tech advance convo from the AI operational impact (transcribing) back to the core reason they all exist - engagement of patients where bandwidth is so limited. Ethan Fischer from direct primary care platform KHealth summarized it well, “How can you quarterback (PCP) if you don’t know where the receivers (patients) are.” Good blueprint for innovation for this key care gap that was the theme of HLTH Inc.
Did you hear the rebel rousers cheering throughout Casey Means, MD at #HLTH2024 on the main stage yesterday? Guilty as charged. Put the politics aside. She and Calley Means are breaking through and creating a message that may cause industry veterans to say “duh” in a perplexed state, but their magic is getting people who didn’t know cardiometabolic syndrome from autoimmune syndrome to connect the dots of the need for a solution. HLTH may be over the top. It may be overwhelming. It may be excessive. It may be overstimulating. But it is a masterful convener. Now let’s use it for good to look at what we can do to make sickcare as effective as possible But also what the companion system of sickcare looks like that we need to build. Casey has everyone’s attention of what we don’t have. So let’s build it. All the pieces parts are represented on the showroom floor here in Vegas. But let me just say I have total fan girl FOMO because my partner Justin Politi and our partner in REAL change from soil to cell crime Erin W. Martin both randomly got selfies with Casey Means, MD themselves and I missed her even though we were twinsies in royal blue! Katie Stebbins and Carter Williams we will get our selfie soon enough. Like I told Graham Walker, MD our industry doesn’t deserve the pat on the back of the lasers lights and parties of HLTH. But we do have an opportunity to leverage the convening of everything everywhere all at once to effect REAL change. Now I will kindly step off my soap box, find a dark, quiet room and try to process the past 3 days.
