Most Singaporeans agree that trans and non-binary people should be protected from discrimination, according to the Ipsos’ Pride 2024 study. Conducted across 26 countries with 500 respondents in Singapore, the study has found a strong trend of growing support of LGBTQ+ rights in Singapore, alongside rights for transgender and non-binary people. Singapore’s support for LGBTQ+ rights aligns closely with regional and global averages, according to Ipsos. LGBTQ+ rights, particularly same-sex marriage, have progressed over the past few decades, but depending on where you are, views on LGBTQ+ folks vary tremendously A study from Pew Research Center revealed the huge range of sentiments toward same-sex marriage in #Asia, from 60%+ in favor for Japan, Vietnam, and Thailand to under 25% in favor for Sri Lanka, Malaysia, and Indonesia. 🌈 Inclusiveness isn’t just a trend At #GESSEL we believe that support and accommodation for members of the LGBTQ+ community is critical to building an inclusive, equitable society. We don’t limit ourselves to gestures in June. The LGBTQ+ flag at our reception desk is there on a year-round basis. We want to cultivate an environment in which everybody feels at home. 🌟✊🏳️🌈 💪 As Pride Month gets underway, a quick summary of legal milestones along the road towards LGBTQ+ rights: ☑️Holland (2001): the world’s first legally recognised marriages for same-sex couples. ☑️Germany (2018): recognition of a third gender in official documents. ☑️Uganda (2014): newly enacted laws criminalising homosexuality meet with international opprobrium, leading to their partial overturn. ☑️USA (2011): the American armed forces abandon the "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy, opening military service to declared members of the LGBTQ+ community. We also have our humble but big success: ⚖️ Joanna Kisielińska-Garncarek, PhD represented a transgender individual afflicted by homelessness as part of her work for the Po Drugie Foundation. Thanks to her perseverance, the client was able to sort out criminal charges and received another chance at a dignified life in society. Important though #PrideMonth is, its underlying spirit is very much present at #GESSEL at all other times and informs our daily practice.

🌈🌍Today is #IDAHOBIT2024, which raises awareness about the discrimination faced by LGBTQ+ people worldwide. 🌍🏳️🌈 This year's theme, "No one left behind: equality, freedom and justice for all" was decided through extensive consultations with LGBTQIA+ organisations from around the world. This theme will allow for advocacy and celebrations in many forms - be it from human rights defenders, LGBTQIA+ civil society groups, millions of people in our communities, and our allies. 🌈 Pride Month is almost here, and it’s a powerful reminder that Pride is not just a celebration, but also a protest. 🌈 Things are not looking great. While some countries made some positive steps towards LGBTQ+ inclusion, the UK continues to fall behind. As a queer femme, I am appalled and outraged by the continuous mistreatment of trans and non-binary people. Looking at hate crime stats but also day to day discrimination things are dire. While we, as workplaces and companies, get our rainbow flags out and prepare for the pride parades we attend, let's not forget to look inward. What do you do for your LGBTQ+ employees and customers all year around? Do you have learning initiatives that go deeper then just a glossy allyship session? Do you have policies and more importantly a culture that rejects all forms of homophobia, biphobia and transphobia? And lastly, how do you know? This year, the Historical Archives of the European Union (HAUE) is marking #PrideMonth with the publication of the online exhibition ‘LGBTQ+ at Work - Unveiling the European Parliament's Archives and Commitments’. Pride Month, rooted in the Stonewall riots of June 1969 in the United States, is a time of celebration and visibility for the #LGBTQ+ community and is now celebrated around the world. The new online exhibit explores documents from the European Parliament (EP) between 1987 and 2003 relevant to LGBTQ+ rights. It provides insights into some of the inner workings of the Parliament, and illustrates the mechanisms citizens have used to make their voices heard at the European level. More specifically, ‘LGBTQ+ at Work’ spotlights a selection of inquiries during the European Parliament’s ‘Question Time’ that illustrate the ongoing battle against LGBTQ+ #discrimination across member states. The specific examples inform viewers about the different forms of discrimination that LGBTQ+ people faced, and highlight the efforts of several inspiring MEPs and public figures to find a European remedy for this discrimination.
