We love data in media and advertising. So, why are we ignoring what is considerably the most important data there is - a health check on our industry. I urge you to read over the 2024 Create Space Report and more importantly, share and take ACTION. "The sheer number of issues that need to be addressed may be daunting. From sexism and racism to ableism and ageism, we need to continue to battle on many fronts. But there is no room for DE&I fatigue. Here's an action that I am still digesting, so I don't have any profound thoughts yet. The FTC has launched an inquiry into 8 companies for using "surveillance pricing." Essentially the FTC alleges these companies are using "location, demographics, credit history, and browsing or shopping history" to set a targeted price. That seems like a use of technology that just aids in a standard business practice. If I run the Dean + Deluca in the lobby of the Times building, I am charging people prices very different from the prices for bait shop BBQ Clay's House of Pig sells in Tupelo. (I've eaten at both place's and I prefer the bait shop BBQ). Insurers use credit history and location as a proxy for risk in pricing their products. Now the FTC is on the prowl. “Consumer Data…to be Continually Reduced” 95% of US decision makers expect further signal loss in 2024 and beyond 🫥📈 In a report last month, IAB revealed the state of data among a cross-section of 500 brands, agencies, and publishers. It found: 🫥 72% expect “consumer data, including browsing history, PII, and location to be continually reduced.” 🚨 Over 80% of respondents say the makeup and structure of their organisations are being directly impacted by signal loss and legislation. 🎯 However, it's not all doom and gloom: 66% plan to increase contextual spend in response to market changes, coming out highest in terms of increase in ad spend by tactic.
