I hope you had a great weekend and are gearing up for a long Thanksgiving weekend with family and friends! I wanted to share some noteworthy market intelligence regarding legal hiring trends in the DC-Maryland-Virginia region from November 2022 to the present.
Over the past year, there have been approximately 3061 lateral moves in the DMV legal sector, with 75.5% of attorneys making lateral moves to other law firms. The remaining have lateraled to roles in government, in-house positions, and a smaller percentage to judicial and non-attorney roles.
Notably, Litigation, Intellectual Property, and corporate law are the leading practice areas for lateral moves, while Government, Labor & Employment, and Antitrust have also experienced significant movement.
Interestingly, attorneys across all experience levels have made moves, but those who graduated from law school between 2016 and 2021 are particularly in demand. Years 2-5 have proved to be the best time to lateral!
In the current quarter, law firms have increased hiring efforts to fill positions slated for Q1, with multiple of my candidates in the interview process. Given that lateral moves can often be a lengthy process, now is an opportune time to explore new opportunities and secure a position, especially if considering a move post-bonus season. This proactive approach can also help avoid the Q4 rush of candidates.
