Great explanation of the importance of ground rules given by Bruce Pitt-Payne QTiPP, CPII, LPI, RCMP retired (Sgt) on this short video. If such a process is new to you don’t be afraid of having a written prompt to help you and as Bruce suggests make them part of a conversation (keep any written notes you do make though for potential disclosure). Remember it’s not your interview, it’s not your information you are merely a facilitator. They are not just the reserve of the criminal investigation process - they are just as important in a civil or workplace investigation. They work so why not give them a go.

Here’s a reporting lesson I learned years ago from an ace reporter at The Washington Post when I worked there: (Almost) every interview you do should end with the exact same three questions. Yes, the same questions! No matter the subject or source, there’s a formula to follow every time. (Within reason — of course I don’t mean literally every interview, but you know.) This formula helps you fill in the blind spots you have around a topic, it helps you develop your source list, and it can lead to more story ideas down the road. What are these magical questions three? Very simple: • What would you like to talk about that I’m not asking about? • Who else do you think I should talk to for this story? • What are some trends or ideas in this area you think reporters should be covering? Let’s dive in and explore why these are so crucial to the reporting process.

Guess what? These are the same 3 questions I prep clients and interview sources to respond to during media interviews. Expect that these questions are coming and have your key messages ready. More often than not the response to the “what else…” question ends up in the article / clip. #pr #mediarelations #mediatraining
