Ørsted have acquired Eversource’s 50% stake in Sunrise Wind, a key offshore wind project, marking this their third major wind farm acquisition in the Northeast U.S. Good Energy have acquired Wessex Eco Energy, a specialist installations, for up to £4 million. This deal aims to expand Good Energy's presence in solar and storage installations. Finally, Octopus Renewables have expanded its portfolio having recently acquired two biomas plants within the UK. 💚 Looking into the political news, the Government also announced its flagship green energy auction, securing 9.6GW of clean energy projects. Ed Miliband reaffirmed this last Friday, by announcing their commitment to accelerating green energy projects, specifically mentioning the development of the Cottam Solar Farm. This major solar initiative could power up to 250,000 homes and further strengthens the UK’s push toward its Net Zero targets. 💚 So, with the sector moving at such a rapid pace, it is worth noting that I am on the lookout for a Senior Net Zero Consultant to join a global engineering company based in Manchester on a permanent contract. Considering the region's available capacity of 6,800 megawatts across #Massachusetts, #Connecticut, and #RhodeIsland, this marks a significant step towards fulfilling the area's energy needs and securing a robust project pipeline for the upcoming decade. 🔸 Proposal Highlights: Avangrid Renewables is advancing with two projects totaling nearly 1,900 MW, with planned operations across Salem and New Bedford, MA, as well as Bridgeport, CT. Ørsted’s Starboard Wind focuses on Rhode Island and Connecticut, bringing 1,184 MW of energy, building on its investments in Providence, RI, and New London, CT. OW Ocean Winds presents the 1,200 MW SouthCoast Wind project, with strategic interconnection in Brayton Point and marshalling and O&M in New Bedford. Exciting update! The 130MW Glenrowan Solar Farm in northern Victoria is now energised, ready to power 45,000 homes with renewable electricity! Pacific Partnerships, part of CIMIC Group, achieved this milestone on Tuesday, with exports to the national grid starting in December and full production by March 2024. Located in Victoria’s North East Renewable Energy Zone, the project, backed by a 10-year power purchase agreement with the Victorian Government, is a major step towards sustainable energy. Simon Nicholls, managing director of Pacific Partnerships, commends the team's efforts for on-time energisation just one year after construction began. The project is expected to create 125 full-time jobs, with a focus on local hiring. Scottish Renewables is launching a new team to focus on the offshore wind sector – with Crown Estate Scotland’s current Director of Marine at the helm. The four-strong team – to be led by Colin Palmer, currently working at the Scottish public body responsible for seabed leasing – will focus on enabling and accelerating development of offshore wind farms in Scotland’s seas. The new team will also be responsible for supporting Scottish Renewables’ role in co-ordinating the Scottish Offshore Wind Energy Council (SOWEC) Barriers to Deployment group. The move comes as Scottish Renewables’ membership continues to grow with more and more businesses moving from oil and gas to renewables and the organisation’s relocation to larger, sustainable offices in Glasgow city centre earlier this year. Claire Mack, Chief Executive of Scottish Renewables, said: “The renewable energy industry has never had such an abundance of projects like this before and I'm determined that we should have the capacity to represent our members as they begin to build out tens of billions of pounds worth of offshore wind in Scotland’s seas." Following up on what I heard from a number of Leo Berwick clients in Washington DC who recently joined us for the proposed 48E and 45Y hearings and with introduction of ITCs in Canada I’m struck by how far renewables incentives have come. I worked on my first renewables transaction about 16 years ago on behalf of an inbound investor who was curious about the (new at that time!) feed-in-tariff programs that took off across a number of jurisdictions in North America. These contracts provided just enough subsidy and term/non-curtailment certainty for the technologies of the day to compete with conventional power generation in financing and equity markets. These gave way to new contract models like contracts-for-differences or renewable portfolio standard mandates and other structures that ensured continued renewables procurement in individual power markets. Market operators generally achieved their desired aims of renewables penetration but it led to a lot of disparity between markets. Tax equity and virtual PPAs leveled the playing field first by allowing the private sector to finally play a direct role in subsidizing renewables development, this time with projects being more market agnostic with more consideration given to their parity to the local grid and renewable attributes available to the offtaker, a proxy for production. Broadened potential technology eligibilities for PTC and ITC incentives under new 48E and 45Y rules now present the opportunity of leveling the playing field across technologies with GHG abatement featuring prominently in eligibility. - Will the combination of PTC and ITC incentives under broader technology definitions incentivize ENOUGH production and prioritize development of high capacity factor projects, or will broad incentives lead to project clustering and especially high intermittency in local areas? - Will ITCs being made available across the broader supply chain help reduce equipment costs and bring projects even CLOSER to grid parity? - With Canada implementing ITCs in the spirit of what was introduced under the Inflation Reduction Act in the United States, how much more will the pendulum swing towards tax credits and incentives being the primary means of incentivizing renewables?

Very little agricultural land being used. 190MW of endless, cheap energy in Alberta from Canadian Wind developer Potentia. Lease payments for 25 year for the farmers. Still able to grow 80% of their crops. Fixed-rate power for 25 years. Still have BTU's of NG saved to be used for heating.  - SSE completed the acquisition of Triton Power for £341 million, as part of its commitment to accelerate decarbonisation. The acquisition includes the Saltend Power Station near Hull, which will be pivotal in the transition from gas to hydrogen. 🟢EDF’s West Burton B Solar Farm Begins Construction
 - Construction has started on EDF Renewables’ West Burton B Solar Farm in Nottinghamshire. Cogency is delighted to have assisted Akaysha Energy to recently gain planning approval for two major Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS). The first, at Elaine in western Victoria, is an 800MWh BESS located next to the Elaine Terminal Station and close to the Lal Lal Wind Farm. The second, next to the Palmerston substation in Tasmania, is a 200MWh BESS located centrally to Tasmania’s grid and close to the proposed Marinus connection point. Cogency also led an extensive community engagement program, and pleasingly, neither project received any objections. At a time when Governments across Australia are being criticised for delays in approving renewable energy projects, we were delighted to receive planning approval for Elaine within 6 months and Palmerston within 4 months. These approvals demonstrate the benefits of robust design, detailed technical work and comprehensive stakeholder engagement.
