Late summer and the start of school always make me reflect on my many years of teaching and this year is no different. I've been thinking a lot about what I've learned from all the classes, students, lessons, PDs, and the mindless minutia of education in America. I've had this list for about 3 years, it's changed and grown. Here's the latest iteration of "What I've Learned from Teaching Teens."

Cultivate Inner Joy and Watch It Spread: Lessons from a Lifetime of Teaching, part 2

One way to begin is to ask yourself what your best hopes are as you begin planning to teach students. Once you have an answer, ask their parents how they learn best at home in the past, at pre-school, early years of school and in other contexts such as boy scouts, church activities, tutoring. Ask how other teachers have taught them successfully before. I think the worst thing to do is to assume a certain way of teaching them will work, according to their diagnosis and when it doesn't, both the teacher and student feel frustrated. Students with challenges are still able to tell you who was able to teach them and describe to you how they did it. Perhaps a teacher taught a student about science in a way that made her interested. Choose books on science, then, honoring their interest. Above all, see the student with challenges as competent, just not currently experiencing an environment where they show their competency...yet.

Here are a few lessons that teachers can learn from their students.

If you could talk to your younger teacher self, what would you say? 🍎 This is me in my FIRST YEAR of teaching at age 23. 1995. Palisades Charter High School in sunny California where I was born and raised. I was strong in spirit then. Now I'm also strong in strategy and endurance. How do we TRANSFORM ourselves? What does this even mean? 🦋 Transformation is NOT: *giving up your original values that you penned in a personal teaching philosophy *becoming someone you're not *being so subservient to critical and demeaning administrators that you lose your integrity *compromising your ethics 🦋 Transformation IS: *being introspective *willingness to grow and learn *open-mindedness *strength *cultivation of talents *refinement *embracing the new ...and so much more... And here's something I learned on the other side of these 30 years in the trenches. Redefinition of TEACHER SELF-IMAGE. When we redefine ourselves, we transform ourselves personally and professionally. In academic terms and constructs, this is called "professional identity transformation". 💫 The journey always begins with YOU. When I look back at my younger self, there is SO MUCH I would say to her, but would I really want to prevent myself from learning the hard lessons? Going through the hard knocks? Would anything I say now to my younger teaching persona change the road I took teaching students in numerous educational sectors, grades, and positions? No. Because it's the nature of the job. We are BECOMING. And we can only begin to touch upon teaching mastery through the trials that come with being a loving, caring teacher. Our hearts hurt often. But there are many wonderful memories for me over these last three decades. **The Essence of Reflection for Teachers** Reflection is crucial for effective teaching. It involves thoughtfully evaluating teaching methods, understanding student needs, and adapting strategies for better outcomes. By reflecting, teachers enhance their practices, support student success, and foster professional growth. As the school year ends, teachers should evaluate their teaching methods, classroom management, and student engagement. Consider what strategies worked, what didn’t, and why. Reflect on student progress, individual needs, and how well learning goals were met. Assess your professional growth, challenges faced, and successes achieved. Sharing reflections with peers builds a collaborative learning community, improving overall education quality. Ultimately, reflection helps teachers continuously improve and stay resilient in their profession. So tell me super teachers, will you do some reflection as 2023/2024 school year comes to an end? I'd love to get feedback on a question I'm pondering - NOT asking for a friend. Imagine you had a child who'd just entered college. They say they want to be a teacher. They've worked with kids pretty extensively and probably have an idealized sense about teaching, thanks to having had some excellent teachers, and frankly to having been a good student themselves. -What would you tell them? -Is there a kind of teaching you'd try to guide them towards? (EC, secondary, special ed, etc.) -Any suggestions regarding the path to becoming a teacher - tips for getting into the profession, but also to becoming a great teacher? -Finally, in good conscience, could you really guide your kid towards teaching, considering how our society treats educators? (With respect to that last question: Like I said, very much not asking for a friend. I couldn't be prouder of the choice that he's making, and am so thankful for the teachers he and my other kids have had, but...as his dad, I worry. A lot.)

Okay for the last time!! Let’s get this right, ‘flipped lesson’ does not mean ‘role reversal’. Please stop using the term like it means that ‘students become the teacher for that lesson’. Because it does not mean that. If I had a penny for everytime a teacher uses the term ‘flipped lesson’ in the wrong context I would probably be on the Forbes list 😂. Here is a piece of history for your information: The concept of ‘flipped learning’ is credited to two high school chemistry teachers, Jonathan Bergmann and Aaron Sams. They began experimenting with recording their lectures and having students watch them at home, allowing for more interactive and engaging activities during class time. Their experiences were documented in a 2012 book titled "Flip Your Classroom: Reach Every Student in Every Class Every Day." Bergmann and Sams are considered pioneers in popularizing the flipped classroom model. Flipped lessons, or flipped classroom approach, involve reversing the traditional order of teaching by delivering instructional content outside the classroom and using class time for application and discussion. Students typically review pre-recorded lectures, videos, or other materials at home, allowing in-class time to be dedicated to activities, discussions, and collaborative work facilitated by the teacher.
