On average, Literacy First students show significant improvement by the middle of the school year. We recently wrapped up our midyear benchmark testing and can clearly see student gains in each grade level as illustrated by these graphs. This data shows how Literacy First students performed on assessments for certain literacy skills in comparison to their peers who were performing similarly at the beginning of the year, but who did not receive Literacy First support in the fall. Literacy First students on average show more accelerated growth in their letter-sound and oral-reading fluency. The experts are clear that when it comes to literacy and reading, teaching young people shouldn’t just be centered around the technical details. Every child comes from a different background and context, informing how they see the world around them and how they approach the stories they read. If we want to help promote greater widespread literacy, we need to be sure that these students are all empowered to approach the subject on equal footing. Did you know that students who aren't reading on grade level by third grade are four times less likely to graduate from high school? Shockingly, more than half of American adults read below a sixth-grade level and nearly one in five adults read below a third-grade level. Only 10% of all adults in need of literacy support are currently receiving services.
