Thanks to the efforts of park and recreation professionals through the United States, local park and recreation agencies generated more than $201 billion in economic activity and supported more than 1.1 million jobs in 2021. Beyond the nationwide impact, this report shows the economic contribution of parks and recreation at the state level too. The estimates of total economic impacts include the direct, indirect and induced effects of operations and capital spending by local park and recreation agencies in each state and the District of Columbia. The National Park Foundation is excited to invest $2.2 million in grants to affinity groups to build lifelong relationships with national parks. Everyone should be able to fully experience the benefits of the outdoors. BREAKING NEWS: City of St. Petersburg, Florida ranks No. 1 in Florida and No. 11 in the nation for park systems by the Trust for Public Land (TPL) in this year’s ParkScore® index, which analyzed 100 of the largest U.S. cities to determine how well each city is meeting the needs for parks. According to TPL, 78% of St. Pete residents are within a 10-minute walk of a park. Outstanding addition to a body of research highlighting the power of parks to generate economic benefits in cities.

As a former Parks and Recreation professional I can say the episodes I did watch did have some similarities. There are many days I miss the profession, being surrounded by so many peers who are very passionate about their careers. Parks and Recreation professionals provide programs and services for people when they are not working. Thus, typically involves many nights and weekends. Parks and Recreation professionals also where many hats. Marketing, Budgeting, Leadership, and Creative Programming. If you were in facilities you also developed a skill set in understanding Safety, OSHA, Project Management, Janitorial, HVAC, Electrical and unfortunately Plumbing. I included the works schedule below in an article that I posted this morning, but I thought that it could be "lost" in the article so I thought that I would post it on its own. This is the planning works schedule that I have been working through in 2023. I approached this year knowing what I had to do, which was to produce the Parks and Recreation Planning Portfolio for Council, and this is how I did that. If you are new/ish to the parks and recreation industry, especially if you are with local government, this might give you the individual steps that you will need to undertake to get strategies adopted, besides the actual writing of the strategies.
