To commemorate my 30th career anniversary, I am sharing lessons from three decades of “figuring it out”. I call it WE MOVE!
My first professional job was Director of Human Resources at Securities America. Here are my WE MOVE lessons regarding human resource (HR) management:
🎭 HR’s job is to reduce the drama, not create (or exacerbate) the drama.
Every HR problem does not need an immediate response. Sometimes you need to let problems work themselves out. Let them percolate. As the emotions diminish over time, the urgency of the issue also diminishes. And people figure it out without HR intervention. Which is the best outcome.
🗯 If two people are having an interpersonal issue ask: “Have you talked to the other person about this issue?” Then coach them on how to have that conversation. 90% of workplace conflicts can be resolved this way.
👯 Great HR professionals are very skilled at helping leaders and employees have authentic conversations.
🥅 80% of your job as a leader can done simply by setting clear expectations (often in the form of goals) - and linking those to rewards (i.e. how the person gets paid).
👨🎓 👩🎓 Hire job candidates who can do the job you need done today …. AND can grow into the next job …. Assessing potential is as equally important in candidate assessment as matching knowledge, skills and abilities.
📔 When applying personnel policy, think about the intent of the policy, not the just letter of the policy. Even the best written and most thorough personnel policy will come up against human situations where strict application of the policy is detrimental to the values and goals of the organization. With a little extra effort, you can figure out how to be consistent, safe and fair in policy application yet still meet the human need.
P.S. I have worked with three excellent HR Directors in my career – Kathy Shotkoski, Nicole Cummings, PHR and Eric Jensen, PHR, SHRM-CP, SWP. And I worked with many talented HR professionals – two of whom I worked with for over 20 years – Kevin Lammers and Kay Connelley. Each of them helped me be a more thoughtful, empathetic and strategic HR professional. I am grateful to you all!
