TRITON SNAILS…our friends in the fight to reduce coral damage by COTS…but how? Australian Institute of Marine Science SeaSim is conducting some fascinating and potentially very rewarding research with COTS and tritons. Did you know a COTS can smell a triton? And when it does it gets the hell away as fast as it can! So what is it smelling exactly? That is what AIMS is figuring out because it may lead to production of a COTS repellant. Another way to reduce or prevent loss of priority reefs. But…there is suspicion that COTS also smell each other and use that to congregate. Which they like to do and especially for reproduction. They need to be close. Therefore AIMS research has expanded to now identify what compound attracts them. This could lead to production of an attractant to bring them to an area to make it easier to cull them. Like drawing them to a waterhole. I had absolute pleasure the other week to get an impromptu tour of the triton and COTS tanks and I heard some amazing facts about tritons that you won’t find online or in your usual books. 👏🏻 Lee shared some fascinating facts…eg did you know tritons look after their eggs? A significant discovery has recently been made during a sonar survey off the coast of Germany in the Bay of Mecklenburg. A roughly half-mile long section of wall, now referred to as the "Blinkerwall", has been found. Comprised of about 300 boulders and 1,400 smaller stones, this structure is estimated to date back 10,000 years. It's suggested by Jacob Geersen of the Leibniz Institute for Baltic Sea Research Warnemünde that the wall could have been a part of a hunting route utilized for chasing reindeer before the region was deluged with about 70 feet of water. Further exploration of the area is planned to possibly uncover any embedded animal bones or projectiles.
