Malaysia is set to see a surge in PE investments over the coming months.

Maybank Investment Bank Bhd (Maybank IB) believes that Malaysia is currently undergoing its third investment upcycle. It said the combined private and public investments share of gross domestic product (GDP) picked up from the recent post-pandemic low of 19.7% in 2022, to 21.3% in the first quarter of 2024 (1Q2024). In a note on Monday, Maybank IB said the previous two investment upcycles saw gross fixed capital formation’s share of the GDP surging from 22.1% in 1987 to 49.2% in 1997, and from 21.7% in 2009 to 26.6% in 2013. https://lnkd.in/dr63xkwS

BlackRock named Yik Ley Chan to run its Southeast Asia private credit investments. Chan will manage Southeast Asia private credit origination and execution from July 2024 in Singapore, a promising market for the asset class, according to BlackRock. “Client demand for private markets investments has increased dramatically – a trend we believe is here to stay. We look forward to drawing on Yik Ley’s experience to create attractive opportunities for our clients,” said deborah ho, country head of Singapore and head of Southeast Asia at BlackRock, in a statement. Private credit and financial institution structure have been Chan's specialties for over 16 years. He previously led Jefferies Credit Partners Asia private credit markets in Singapore, Malaysia, Vietnam, Indonesia, and the Philippines. As the world's largest asset manager, BlackRock manages approximately $9 trillion in assets. It invests for central banks, sovereign wealth funds, multilaterals, pension funds, and government #organisations. The Global Private Debt platform manages $85 billion. Meanwhile, its Asia Pacific Private #Credit platform invests in Australasia, South Korea, Japan, Greater China, India, and Southeast Asia. In Southeast Asia, BlackRock has focused on digitalization and new economy sectors in Indonesia and manufacturing and real estate in Vietnam. Australia leads its Asia Pacific private debt investments, followed by Singapore and Hong Kong. It also invests in corporate financing to Chinese companies with a “China angle” abroad. Private finance is growing in Southeast Asia as enterprises seek alternative capital in downturns and valuation resets. Asia private credit #fundraising rose from $6.3 billion in 2019 to $11.2 billion in 2022. Malaysia's state-owned private equity fund Ekuinas announced its 800 million ringgit ($170.4 million) first private credit fund last month.
